Loïck Peyron overtakes Le Cam
Monday 17 November 2008
Loick Peyron (Gitana-Eighty) slipped behind fellow Frenchmen Jean Le Cam (VM-Matériaux) for less than 24 hours before reclaiming the leadership of the race.
Loïck Peyron's strategy to follow a western route finally paid off. The French skipper undertook three or four gybes through the night, starting just 10 miles north of Sao Nicolao, then sailed for just over an hour back to the west before gybing again to make a 20-mile leg through to the west of Sao Nicolau.
The manoeuvre worked remarkably well and Jean Le Cam (VM-Matériaux), the previous leader, followed by Sébastien Josse (BT) are now just over 24 nautical miles behind Loïck Peyron (Gitana-Eighty). They are now pushing their boats westward toward Peyron's route.
