    Suspected mastermind of G.Bissau 'mutiny' arrested
    The suspected mastermind of an attack on the home of Guinea-Bissau's president has been arrested in Senegal on Wednesday. On Nov. 23, mutinous soldiers attacked the residence of President Joao Bernando Vieira, killing two guards.
  • ZIMBABWE
    Riot police break up Harare protests
    Riot police broke up protests by trade unionists complaining about limited cash withdrawals. Doctors and nurses who tried to hand in a petition complaining about the country's deteriorating health system were also dispersed by police.

    No prospect of EU Congo mission for now
    Belgium says no European country is willing to lead a peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, despite calls for the EU to provide a rapid reaction force to help overstretched peacekeepers there.

    UN Security Council supports EU 'anti-pirates plan'
    In a unanimous vote, the UN Security Council approved the 'anti-piracy plan' the European Union will begin on Dec. 8. The EU operation, dubbed Atalanta, will see around seven warships patrol Somalia's Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean waters.

    Cholera death toll nearing 500, says WHO
    The World Health Organization said the victims of the latest cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe had reached 473 since August, after government sources had put the death toll at 425 with a further 11,000 cases of contamination.

    The presidents of Gabon, Congo and Equatorial Guinea are being investigated in France by anti-corruption groups which accuse them of embezzling public funds to acquire luxury homes in France.

    An estimated 2,000 youths stormed a mosque in the city of Jos even as officials appealed for an end to the religious violence between Christians and Muslims that has already killed hundreds.
  • SOMALIA
    Pirates to release arms-laden Ukrainian ship
    Somali pirates and the owners of a Ukrainian ship carrying 33 tanks and other military hardware have reached a deal to release the vessel. The gunmen demanded a $20 million ransom for the Kenya-bound ship captured in September.
