Several protesters injured in new Bangkok attack

At least eight Thai protesters were wounded in a pre-dawn grenade explosion in Bangkok a day before a major anti-government rally. The new attack comes two days after a similar attack killed one and wounded 29 protesters.

    A French soldier was killed when a mine exploded near Kabul, bringing the death toll of French troops killed in Afghanistan to 25. One of his colleagues was seriously injured in the blast. FRANCE 24's Claire Billet reports from Kabul.

    One of Burma's most famous comedians, who goes by the name of Zarganar, was sentenced Friday to 45 years in prison. Zarganar was arrested in June after organising aid deliveries to victims of Cyclone Nargis.

    The Tibetan government-in-exile has announced it will continue with the Dalai Lama's "Middle Way" approach, which aims to achieve greater autonomy within China through dialogue.

    More than 500 Tibetan dignitaries in exile met for a week in Dharamsala, India, where the Dalai Lama lives in exile. It was the largest assembly of Tibetans in 60 years.

    An explosion ripped through a Shiite funeral procession on Friday in the northwestern town of Dera Ismail Khan, killing at least five people and wounding some 40 others, in what appeared to be a sectarian attack from Sunni Muslims.
