Crackdown on Burmese protests

The Burmese government's forceful repression Sept. 27, 2007 ended weeks of street protests. FRANCE 24's correspondents were in Burma during and after the crackdown.

After 47 days of saffron demonstrations, the military junta violently brought pro-democracy movements in Burma to a halt on Sept. 27, 2007. General Than Shwe says he is ready to negotiate with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi - a possible breakthrough....

But according to diplomats, far more people died in the crackdown than the regime admits. After spending eight days undercover in Rangoon, our correspondent in Burma reports on night arrests and the use of torture.

Crackdown in the heart of Burma Thousands of Buddhist monks and ordinary Burmese have defied threats and spoken out against more than 40 years of military rule.

Burma in shock after repression A week after Burma's ruling junta cracked down on nationwide protests, people are still in shock. Most monks are in hiding, and the streets of Rangoon are deserted.

Chinese media silent over Burma crisis While there's been little discussion of the Burmese crackdown in the Chinese press, bloggers outside the country condemns it.

Rebels claim attack in Southeast As the gov't moves troops toward protest-hit Rangoon, ethnic Karen rebels are stepping up their attacks.
