2008 African Nations Cup
The African Nations Cup is back in West Africa. After hosting the 1963 and 1978 editions and co-organising the 2000 event with Nigeria, Ghana plays host to the XXVI competition, from Jan. 20 to Feb. 10, 2008.
Sixteen nations, the continent’s elite teams, are competing in the tournament, known by its French acronym CAN. Among the participants, three teams are generally considered the favorites to win: the Ivory Coast, Ghana and Cameroon.
Marking the growing global character of the competition, this year's event has a European flavour. Of the 368 players competing in Ghana, 211 play for European clubs, with the largest share in France's top two leagues. The leading competition of the African Football Confederation, CAN plays a growing role in the international football arena. Broadcast throughout the world, the tournament could reach a potential audience of two billion spectators.
