The Buzz: Hillary and sexism

Monday 04 February 2008

Hillary Clinton has to face a barrage of sexist attacks on the Internet. Sometimes the barbs are so nasty, even Republican candidate John McCain doesn't seem quite comfortable with it.

The Buzz, compiled by Pierre-Ludovic Viollat and Mary McCarthy, airs as part of FRANCE 24's "USA 2008" show, devoted to the US presidential campaign.

Any presidential hopeful in the United States needs a thick skin. But Hillary Clinton has had to deal with all the usual barbs as well as an extra helping of sexist slurs online

The Web is crammed with videos and spoofs featuring the former US First Lady in the Men's toilet and wearing boxer shorts among others.

Even Republican hopeful John McCain was caught off-guard by the sexist attacks. At a recent campaign meeting, one of McCain's female supporter asked a pointed question. "So how do we beat the bitch?" she asked as laughter filled the room.

There was no condemnation from an unamused McCain,  just a nimble side-stepping of the issue. "Can I give a translation?" he asked.

The "how do we beat the bitch" question has spread rapidly online, becoming a catchphrase for Hillary-haters everywhere.

Clinton is also a target thanks to the exploits of her husband, Bill Clinton, while he was president. His liasion with Monica Lewinski providing particular fodder.

At a campaign rally, a young man appraoched Clinton, asking if he could be her intern. "I'd like to be your intern. I know you've had a lot of trouble with them in the past.  I can bring my own cigar," he added, in a reference to the infamous 1996 incident between Lewinski and the then president.

The road to the White House in 2008 hasn't been short of surprises.
