Twenty French soldiers serving in a NATO-led force in Kosovo were wounded, eight of them seriously, during clashes Monday in the northern town of Kosovska Mitrovica, the French army chief of staff said.

The soldiers were hurt during an operation to retake a UN courthouse occupied by Serbs opposed to Kosovo's independence declaration.

Eight were taken to a local hospital in Kosovo and 12 were treated on site, said Commander Christophe Prazuck, spokesman of the army chief of staff.

None of the wounded are in critical condition, he added.
