Manaudou withdraws from 200m freestyle at Olympics
France's Laure Manaudou pulled out of the 200m freestyle at the National Championships, but claimed the 100m backstroke title only hours later. Once an asset, consecutive races now seem to be taking their toll. (Story: C.Casali, C.Moore)
World record holder Laure Manaudou will not take part in the 200 metres freestyle at the Beijing Olympics after pulling out of the event at her national championships, the French federation said on Tuesday.
Manaudou had struggled to earn an Olympic berth in the 400 metres freestyle on Monday when she finished third in the French final and suffered her first defeat in the discipline at a major championships since June 2004.
She set her 200 metres freestyle world record when she swam the distance in one minute 55.52 seconds at last year's world championships in Melbourne.
