Chinese flock to Algeria for work opportunities

Sunday 11 May 2008

In recent years, gas resources have allowed Algeria to build new infrastructure and foreign workers are flocking to the country. In Azzaba, a Chinese company is building a water treatment plant. (Report: A. Tazir)

The town of Azzaba, 500 kilometers from Algiers, seems no different from other small Algerian towns at first glance. But it’s recently seen a new addition to its population of fifty thousand – construction workers from China. Fifty of them have come to help build a water treatment plant.

With a growth rate of 5%, oil and gas-rich Algeria has become an attractive destination to immigrants. The country lacks skilled workers and the Chinese are seizing on the opportunities to be had there.

Be the first to react.
