China quake buries at least 10,000 people in one city: Xinhua

At least 10,000 people remained buried Tuesday in a single city in China's Sichuan province following a massive earthquake, Xinhua news agency said.

The disaster occurred in the city of Mianzhu, about 35 kilometres (22 miles) southeast of the epicentre of the 7.8-magnitude quake that struck on Monday, the report said.

It also mentioned a separate "toll" of 1,500 for the city, without specifying whether the figure referred to deaths or all casualties.

The state media also reported Tuesday that at least 1,000 students and teachers were killed or buried in the collapse of another school in southwestern China.

"So far, the number of dead or missing is estimated at more than 1,000" at the school, Xinhua news agency said in a dispatch from Beichuan county, where reports earlier had said up to 5,000 people in the area may have been killed by Monday's quake.
