Austrian kills wife, child, parents and father-in-law with axe

A 39-year-old Austrian man has confessed to killing his wife, his daughter, his parents and his father-in-law with an axe, police said Wednesday.

The bodies of the man's family were discovered in Vienna, Linz and Ansfelden after he turned himself in to the police in the early hours of Wednesday, Vienna police said in a statement.

The bodies of the man's 42-year-old wife and his seven-year-old daughter were found in their flat in the Hietzing area of Vienna, where the man was believed to have killed them early Tuesday.

The bodies of his parents were found in Linz, 180 kilometres (112 miles) and of his father-in-law in Ansfelden, south of Linz.

They were believed to have been killed on Tuesday evening.

The man gave no immediate motive for the murders and the murder weapon has not yet been found, police said.
