Jaipur police suspect Islamist terror link
Police in India's western city of Jaipur questioned eight people in connection with Tuesday's string of deadly bomb blasts which killed at least 60 people. Police suspect Bangladesh-based terror group HuJi's involvement in the attack.
Rajasthan’s walled Pink city (Jaipur) has never been on the list of terror targets. The attack has left the city’s residents and authorities in a daze. A curfew has been imposed on the old bustling city as a precautionary measure.
Investigators sifted for clues among mangled bodies and debris at the blast sites. They suspect the bombs were strapped to new bicycles bought in Jaipur itself. “We’ve found a number of clues at the blast site,” Kanhaiya Lal, Jaipur’s Additional Director General of Police, told FRANCE 24. “We’ve questioned a few suspects and have identified the people who sold the bicycles to the attackers.”
Jaipur under curfew
Jaipur police questioned eight people in connection with eight near-simultaneous bomb blasts in Jaipur on Tuesday. A ninth bomb was defused, police authorities said. A man injured in one of the blasts and a rickshaw-puller is among those picked up for questioning.
The bombs exploded near Jaipur’s main temple and in thickly populated residential areas - and in markets, which are the city’s main tourist attraction. “In India, it’s difficult to supervise crowded areas like markets,” retired Major General Afsar Karim said. “There are no security surveillance cameras and it’s difficult for the police to be present everywhere, watching all the time. These factors make Indian cities a vulnerable target.”
“Foreign elements with internal support”
No group has claimed the attack but investigators and the Indian intelligence agencies suspect a Pakistan or Bangladesh-based terror group’s involvement.
Police in Jaipur mainly suspect the Bangladesh-based Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islami (HuJi). “Some of the clues indicate links to the Bangladeshi group but nothing is confirmed,” Lal said.
According to officials quoted by the Indian press agency Press Trust of India (PTI), HuJi has managed to establish a strong base in the western state of Rajasthan. The terror group was held responsible for attacks on a military base in the Indian city of Rampur in January 2008.
HuJi is also blamed for the terror strike on a Sufi shrine in another Rajastani city of Ajmer in October 2007. The attack killed at least two people and left 17 injured.
Analyst Afsar Karim, meanwhile, says it would be impossible to carry out this attack without internal support: “Investigators can point fingers at Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Toiba or Bangladesh’s HuJi but these foreign groups have established a strong base in India. They target regions or cities where they have people to help them carry out these attacks.”
The intensity of the attacks in Jaipur was similar to the ones in other Indian cities of Hyderabad, Varanasi and Malegaon in the past two years. In 2007, the southern city of Hyderabad was hit twice. In May 2007, a bomb explosion rocked the city’s historic mosque killing 11 worshippers during Friday prayers. The attack sparked violent protests by enraged Muslim residents. Later that year in August, three explosions within minutes at an amusement park and a street-side food stall killed at least 40 people.

Pink City Painted Red
Jaipur, famed Pink city of the world was painted Red in blood after series of Bomb blasts. 8 Bombs were activated by timed devices killing more then 70 citizens of Jaipur. Never ever in its 280 years of history had jaipur seen such a mayhem. There were chaos every where when the bomb kept blasting within 13 minutes. People kept loosing their lives irrespective of their ages, cast and creed. There are more then 200 people still seriously injured.
I am living in this beautiful city since last 35 years. This city always gave me a sense of pride. During my trips abroad whenever I use to introduce myself as a person coming from Pink City, the reaction which always followed was oh! that beautiful and peaceful city.
Jaipur is now facing a much bigger challenge of saving its glory and identity. This place is much bigger then just a name in atlas. People are helping people. Last night when there was shortage of blood there were persons lining up to donate blood. The injured were rushed in by bystanders in whatever mode of transport they could lay their hands on. Timely treatment saved so many life. Today different social organisation did every thing for the relatives of injured by providing them medicines, lunch, medical support etc. The peace and harmony of this place cannot be destroyed by some bombs.
Terrorist strategically planned Jaipur. This place is recognized for its tourism across the world. It took USA around 1 hours from the blast to condemn the bombing. This was quite a fast response and shows the impact jaipur has internationally.
As a jaipurite there is sadness and bitterness in our heart. Why us ? But there is also a sense of conviction and solidarity. We know that mere some blasts cannot destroy our history. It will take more then this for people to damage Jaipur. We are all closed today not because we are afraid or scared but as a mark of respect to people who lost their life. Life will back to normal tomorrow and Jaipur will prove to the world that it will stay Pink in heath and harmony always.
UNDERSTANT PAK TERROR GROUPS
The news item is very interesting and well covered by your channel. All the same ,since such acts of terror have internation implications thus would like to further throw light on the factual credentials of HUJI.It is amazing to note that the India Intelligence folks are not in know of factual background of HUJI.This is NOT a Bangladeshi Terror group but in reality it is on ORGAN of Jaish Group of Terror operating from Pakistan soil.
HUJI was formulated as a PROBING GROUP of Harkutal Mujahedeen in J and K (India ) after Harkutal Ansar(HUA ) was dissolved by Jaish Boss.Infact he had come to reorganise HUA to India in the year 1994 and was caught by the Indian forces. The aim of HUJI was to probe the weak spots and draw out military action---ultimately diverting the attention of the forces from the actual induction routes for the terrorist / militant groups from Pak to the valley. It is the Jaish boss who had created bases for HUJI in Bangladesh with the assistance of ISI.The reason for this base to be establish was the availability of safe passage into India and then to the Kashmir valley.Remember ,time for infilteration has started and the Pak based terror groups want to pump in their cadre to the valley.Such diversions is bound to divert the mind if the Intelligence agencies from concentrating to monitor the entry and create panic in the hinterland.Actually entry thro Nepal and the porous borders of Rajasthan are the gateway for the inductioninto India. In the instant case the terror group has caused confusion in Pakistan and now they will exploit the entry thro NEPAL and sea lanes adjoining Gujrat. This why Jaish has been identified as the most dangerous MILITANT GROUP.Let us not forget thaty they have close links with Al Qaida and Taliban also------thus their effort will be to pump in the dreaded well trained lot before the elections are held in the valley
