President Leonel Fernandez was re-elected Friday for a third term as leader of the Dominican Republic, Social Democrat and runner-up Miguel Vargas said as he conceded the election.
"The Dominican people expressed themselves today at the ballot box," Vargas said in a brief statement at the campaign headquarters of his Dominican Revolutionary Party.
"I recognize and accept the results of these elections," he said.
With 29.90 percent of ballots counted, the progressive liberal Fernandez was leading with 53.16 percent of the vote compared to Vargas's 41.13 percent, according to the Central Election Committee.
