Farming breakthroughs in Mali
Food self-sufficiency may not be an impossible dream for Mali. In this Saharan country, the government is determined to make the most of one of the world's most plentiful water resources, the Niger river. (Report: Francois Xavier Freland)
In an effort to help Malians from having to dig through dirt, the country's authorities recently launched the rice initiative plan, with the ambition of reaching food self-sufficiency in the next few years.
In another stimulus campaign, the Malian government is targeting farmers who plan to enter rice production.
To boost the country's farming zones and fight increasing drought, Mali has also launched a massive infrastructure programme, building roads and improving irrigation.
Finally, government payouts help farmers renew farming equipment in desperate need of modernisation.
