Bishop Pierre Whalon on the Anglicans' conference
Bishop Pierre Whalon, head of the Convocation of American Churches in Europe, discusses the divisions within the Anglican Church and warns of the consequences of a real schism.

The Anglican church is in trouble. Divisions over the ordination of women and gay priests came to a head at a key gathering in the UK at the weekend. The Lambeth conference is once-in-a-decade event for the worldwide Anglican communion, which has around 77 million followers.

Yet more than two hundred bishops boycotted it in protest at the consecration of gay clergymen. Some now talk darkly of an irreversible split between liberals and conservatives, and between north and south -- many of the traditionalists are based in Africa.

To discuss this crisis, FRANCE 24 welcomed Bishop Pierre Whalon, in charge of Episcopal churches in Europe. Bishop Whalon is a man of many facets -- bilingual in French and English, he holds degrees in music and divinity, and has numerous articles and blogs to his name.
