Twelve suspected Islamist extremists were killed in clashes overnight Thursday with Algerian security forces east of the capital Algiers, the interior ministry announced Friday.

Security forces ambushed the extremists near Tizi Ouzou in the Kabylie region, 110 kilometres (70 miles) from Algiers, it said, adding that assault rifles, pistols and radio equipment were recovered from the site.

The ambush followed an August 3 suicide attack on a police station claimed by Al-Qaeda's North African branch, which wounded 25 people.

The group also claimed an attack on July 23, in which police said a suicide bomber on a motorbike blew himself up and injured 13 Algerian soldiers in Lakhdaria, also east of Algiers.
