US President George W. Bush said Monday he had told Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin that the violence in Georgia was "unacceptable".
"I said this violence is unacceptable," Bush told US broadcaster NBC, in reference to an exchange he had with Putin while they were attending Friday night's opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.
"I expressed my grave concern about the disproportionate response of Russia and that we strongly condemn bombing outside of South Ossetia.
"I was very firm with Vladimir Putin."
Bush made his remarks in a live interview with NBC in Beijing on the final day of his visit to the Chinese capital to watch the Olympics.
CHENEY EXPRESSES SOLIDARITY
The United States on Monday expressed solidarity with Georgia and warned Russia against continued "aggression" over the South Ossetia conflict, US Vice President Dick Cheney's spokeswoman said.
Cheney made his remarks in a telephone conversation with Georgian President President Mikheil Saakashvili on Sunday afternoon, according to the statement received in Beijing, where President George W. Bush is attending the Olympics.
"The Vice President praised President Saakashvili for his government's restraint, offers of cease-fire, and disengagement of Georgian forces from the zone of conflict in the South Ossetian region of the country," said the statement from Cheney's spokeswoman, Lee Anne McBride.
"The Vice President told President Saakashvili that Russian aggression must not go unanswered, and that its continuation would have serious consequences for its relations with the United States, as well as the broader international community."

Russia..your going to get a boot in the ass
Unbelievable that is the only word that comes to mind when I watch the news and read the blogs about what is happening in Georgia. What is perhaps most vexing is that Russia claims that twelve of their peace keepers (whatever that is - I think they mean spies) were killed that they had to invade to protect about 70K Russian citizens living in Georgia.
Great so they show up and now thousands of people are killed. WOW...that is the Russian way just kill everyone and let GOD separate them later..oh wait they are communist loving atheists and don't believe in GOD - my mistake. I guess they just will use any excuse as the ugly Bear tries to stretch her legs again in the world.
Its a shame, as I count myself as one of the many who had hoped that one day Russia and the United States would become friends and allies in this world of radicals and terrorism. Now I wonder if the French have found their balls and are ready to be the leader they believe they are in the world. Lovers of liberty here is your chance to pony up and put some muscle behind your words.
Russia do yourself and the world a favor...pack up your crap and go home. Use your talents and resources to explore the world and develop new technologies and pioneer new sciences for peace NOT war. No one is going to let a fight between Russia and the USA go nuclear as price is just too high. However, that is not to say that we can't proceed to kick the shit out of each other. What the world seems to always forget is that Uncle Sam has a whole garage of new toys that they have been itching to play with - only they didn't have a big enough playmate.
All that is about to change - and what gets rolled out is going to have Russia crying Uncle if they aren't careful...
