There is no way of the western powers or their allies winning an armed struggle within the territorial imperative of the Russian Federation, no matter what, Russians match the western powers single handedly even without the Chinese and other allies.
Saakashvili made a political and strategical mistake proving his level of IQ and understanding of political matters and it costed Georgia in the end. Is he the only one to blame, of course no, one must check out what kind of advisors are around him.
One way or the other this small conflict proved the world Russia is not to be fiddled with, Russian Federation is not solely made up of drunks and thugs, some of the brightest minds of our times are leading the country (and of course its allies) to a golden era. Hopefully you may see a Russian or a Chinese celebrating the collapse of USA and its capitalism one day.
It is very good that peace was attained in this area. Any confrontation between America and Russia would result in the destruction of the human race. Merci Beaucoups Nikolas Sarkozy! Let us hope peace is sustained.

Its leadership must be insane. No matter what the USA or European Union might say in solidarity, there is simply no way either or both would intervene militarily in FORMER member of the USSR. Their nationhood still to unstable, and their connections both real and strategically too far to maintain the sort of connection that'd allow for success. Georgia's leaders must have willfully ignored the obvious, and fantasized that despite the near impossibility of the USA being able to sparee troops from Iraq, the USA would and bring along EU forces since the EU doesn't have independent transport sufficient to send enough men and materials in such a short time to an active war to intervene in any real way.
The ONLY thing this proved is the LACK of MILITARY strength on Europe and America's part, to what point I do not know.
I hope we have learned that there are some "allies" who abuse the term so badly, whose self-interest is so paramount that it would be far better NOT to include them in any agreement or arrangement where their idiotic self-deluded decisions that cost thousands of lives can plunge the USA/EU into a pointless war we cannot win at a time NOT of our own choosing.
