- Pakistan - Paraguay - Pervez Musharraf

In the papers
FRANCE 24 journalists present a daily round-up of the world's newspapers.

Ultima Hora (Paraguay)
The Lugo Era
Paraguay hails a new president: the former bishop Fernando Lugo. The daily Ultima Hora leads with the headline "The Lugo Era", explaining that his election marks not only the end of over sixty years of conservative rule, but also the first time the country has seen power change hands peacefully.

Dawn (Pakistan)
Impeachement of the president
Pakistan's coalition government is calling for Pervez Musharraf's impeachment... and this leading daily is all for it. Their editorial lays out the case why the president should be forced out of office for having violated the constitution. It even suggests that a constitutional provision on "mental incapacity" be invoked -- saying Musharraf's actions "confirm mental imbalance and a disproportionate sense of self."

The News (Pakistan)
Musharraf security a high-risk job
This paper looks at a key issue that would arise if Musharraf were impeached or froced to resign: once he's no longer president, his life could be in danger. He's on the hit list of a number of groups, especially after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. But as a former president, he would not be entitled to military protection. The only safe route would be exile, and The News tell us that's the choice "the ladies of the Musharraf family" are pushing for.

Washington Post (United States)
GOP Loyalty not a given for young evangelicals
Evangelical Christians played a key role in getting George W. Bush elected twice... But the Washington Post explains that this key demographic is evolving, with young members of the movement in particular moving closer to the centre. Both Barack Obama and John McCain will get a chance to court these voters later on Saturday with appearances at the mega-church of Pastor Rick Warren, perhaps the most influenctial leader for the new generation of evangelicals.
