Sommeil in intensive care after heart attack

Veteran French defender David Sommeil collapsed while training with Valenciennes yesterday and was rushed to intensive care. Tests showed he had suffered a heart-attack. He remains in serious condition.

French defender David Sommeil suffered a heart problem during a training session with Valenciennes on Wednesday and has been admitted to intensive care, the Ligue 1 club said.

The 34-year-old former Manchester City player collapsed unconscious during the training session.

Several players have died from heart problems in recent years, most notably Spaniard Antonio Puerta last year and Cameroon's Marc-Vivien Foe during a Confederations Cup match in Lyon, France in 2003.

Motherwell midfielder Phil O'Donnell died last year after collapsing during a Scottish Premier League match.
