Georgia, Russia cut diplomatic ties

Friday 29 August 2008

Georgian authorities said they would recall their diplomatic staff in Moscow following Russia's recognition of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. In turn, Moscow announced it would close its embassy in the Georgian capital Tbilisi.

Georgia is to withdraw all diplomats from its Moscow embassy within days, a foreign ministry spokeswoman said Friday.

"Within the coming days, Georgia will withdraw all diplomats from its embassy in Moscow," the head of the foreign ministry's press department, Khatuna Iosava told AFP.

"Consular relations with the Russian Federation will be maintained," she said. "It is a downgrade of diplomatic relations, not a complete cut."

Russia said the move would not help ease the crisis between the two caused by the five day war earlier this month.

"We regret this step from the Georgian side. It will not assist our bilateral relations," Russian foreign ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko said, quoted by Interfax news agency.

An unnamed foreign ministry official told state news agency RIA Novosti that Russia would have no choice but to follow suit and close its embassy in Tbilisi.

Georgia's parliament on Thursday called for the government to cut diplomatic ties with Moscow over Russia's "occupation of Georgian territory."

Lawmakers unanimously approved a resolution that "orders the executive power to cut diplomatic ties with the Russian Federation."

It also said that "Russian armed forces, including so-called peacekeepers, are declared as occupying armed forces."

Georgia had already pulled all but two of its diplomats from its embassy in Moscow earlier in the week.

Hundreds of thousands of Georgians live in Russia and cutting diplomatic ties would have left them without consular services.

The move came after Russia on Tuesday recognised two breakaway Georgian regions -- Abkhazia and South Ossetia -- as independent countries. Moscow's recognition of the two regions drew condemnation from Georgia and many Western countries.

Russia sent tanks and troops into Georgian territory in response to a Georgian offensive on August 7 to retake South Ossetia.

Moscow withdrew the bulk of its forces from Georgia last week under a French-brokered ceasefire agreement, but thousands of Russian troops remain deployed in the two rebel regions and in a "buffer

Georgia breaks diplomatic ties with Moscow

Now there is another harebrained idea coming out of Georgia via the U.S. government. It was Georgia that started the crisis on the advice of George W. Bush and Condolencia Rice. So, with a little nudge the Georgian satrap of the U.S., one Mikheil Saakashvili made the wrong move and got trounced by the Russians for it. It seems that the Bush regime had expected a Georgian walk-over of South Ossetia while the Olympics were being held in Beijing on August 7th and that was a grave mistake. The U.S. trained Georgian army was no match for the Russian Krasnoarmayets, who gave them a well-deserved beating.

Of course the maniac in the White House shouted FOUL, because his plans went awry. Sorry Mr. President you have been outsmarted every step of the way by the Russians. Remember Georgia is not Afghanistan or Iraq. This time your lackeys were soundly routed and had to leave all their U.S. made equipment behind, just as the U.S. forces did in Saigon, Vietnam on April 30, 1975.

You country got away with murder in Latin America and now it is receiving its just desserts from Russia. Your Georgian satrap is being given the BUMS rush "From Russia With Love."

    unfortunate for Georgians

How idiotic should Saakashvili be to continue his stubborn figt with the Russians? I he thinks that his "buddy" GW can protect him, he is gravely mistaken. He should set his priorities straight and not to jeopardize his people.
