Sarah Palin, McCain's conservative wild card
Saturday 30 August 2008
With Sarah Palin, Alaska's little-known woman governor and self-termed 'hockey mom', chosen as the Republican Party's vice-presidential candidate, White House hopeful John McCain has made a strategic gamble for the conservative vote.

By France 24 (text) / L. Kammourieh (video)In a surprise move, Republican White House hopeful John McCain has picked a woman, and a Washington outsider, as his running mate. Is the Alaska governor a good choice? What can this little-known conservative bring to McCain's bid for the US presidency? Have your say by clicking on "React".
View our special report on the race to the White House.
Republican presidential hopeful John McCain on Friday officially presented 44-year-old Alaskan governor Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential candidate at a rally in Dayton, Ohio.
"She's not from these parts and she's not from Washington,” said McCain, referring to Palin’s relative anonymity in the US political scene. “But when you get to know her, you're going to be as impressed as I am. She's got the grit, integrity, good sense, and fierce devotion to the common good that is exactly what we need in Washington today."
A surprise choice
Palin’s designation came a day after Barack Obama was officially nominated as the Democratic party’s presidential candidate,
The decision came as a surprise. Until very recently, McCain’s former rival and self-made tycoon Mitt Romney was among the candidates touted for the post. Others cited as possible picks were Senator Joe Lieberman, Al Gore’s running mate in 2000, and Governors Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania, a key swing state, and Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota.
Democrats were unprepared for the choice, according to FRANCE 24 correspondent Ed O’Keefe. “They don’t know what to make of this yet… They were expecting someone a little more conventional.”
McCain’s choice is seen as a move that would help his campaign appeal to women voters. Even though Palin is younger than Barack Obama and has less experience than him, her nomination would give the McCain campaign "opportunity to pick up some of Hillary Clinton's jilted supporters," says O'Keefe.
Sarah Palin – where conservatism and charisma meet
Palin served as a councillor and later mayor of the town of Wasilla, and in 2003-04 as ethics commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, where she campaigned against corruption, criticizing fellow Republicans.
Elected Alaska’s first woman governor in 2006, she led the oil-producing US state for almost two years, pushing for the construction of an oil pipeline.
A staunch opposer of abortion, Palin is married with five children, whose ages range from 4 months to 18 years. She supports Alaska’s ban on gay marriage, though she has said she has gay friends.
Palin’s conservative image is complemented by a mixture of toughness and charisma. A member of the National Rifle Association, Palin is reported to be an avid hunter and sportsman. Moreover, the Republican vice-presidential pick also went through a brief stint on the beauty ramp, coming second in the Miss Alaska beauty pageant in 1984.

Since when have wolves or polar bears contributed to the lives of hard-working people? Why not drill for oil in Alaska instead of relying on foreign oil? Sarah Palin doesn't stumble over any questions railed at her. She's a strong candidate who wants what's best for all Americans. Obama and Clinton are strong candidates who want what's best for themselves. McCain/Palin never made any statements about being ashamed of being Americans. Both records show they've worked hard all their lives to make things better for everyone. Hollywood celebrities and their elite ilk get paid to remember their lines. There's no script involved in real life. We need McCain/Palin to put conservativism back into the mainstream, making hard decisions that aren't always popular with the liberals of this world.

When SHE speaks she knows what she is talking about, there is no stamering or stuttering or have to think on it because she knows what she is talking about. She doesn't have to wait for someone to do the research and tell her what to say. You can't say that about the other side can you.

PALIN WORST CHOICE
By lnelson - HOUSTON TX USA
Good lord... it seems only the idiots in America who have commented here want Palin and think she is a good choice. We get what we vote for and we get what we deserve if we so stupidly vote McCain & Palin. The only clear choice is Obama - for the sake of our country - for the sake of our relations with the rest of the world - for the sake of hope and dreams of people, like me, who have become so disheartened and disillusioned by our embarrassing "leadership" of recent past. Obama is a great leader and can lead our country out of the horrible hole Bush 1 & 2, Reagan & Nixon threw us into. *****Lord help us all - this planet and the US of A if McCain Palin pull it off in November.*******

McCain and Palin
By Ian Phillip Hamilton - UK
Obviously any slate is better for the presence of people who represent the diversity of our world.
Then, given the particularly reactionary views of this woman, and given the nature of the Republican Party as the apologists for greed and imperailism if she were elected, what a terrible indictment of the USA democratic process and what calamitous results for the rest of the world it would produce.
Yours sincerely,
Revd Ian Hamilton

Did John McCain make any mistake by choosing Sarah Palin

Mr. John McCain has made a serious mistake by choosing Ms. Sarah Palin as his next junior colleague
since Ms. Palin, it appears, is not serious about her future work in the event of her being elected.

In my opinion, John McCain the Republican Presidential candidate has made a mistake by choosing
Sarah Palin as his running mate for Vice - Presidential candidate. Since it appears Ms. Palin, being a lady is less
professional than Senator Hillary Clinton.

Palin is not a cartoon character
By Anonyme - PDX
The reason so many Democrats instantaneously hate Palin is because they see her as a cartoon rather than a thinking person. For example, they mock her stance on polar bears without having a clue about the issue. The polar bear is NOT endangered; if/when it IS endangered, fine! Put it on the list! Another of her ridiculed positions is that she "doesn't believe in global warming." Inaccurate. She is pragmatic about energy requirements & is educated about humans' contribution to global warming, estimated to be 3-4% or less of all greenhouse gases. She doesn’t contest global warming, just the uneducated overemphasis on the anthropogenic contribution. (If you are NOT a scientist, please read up on the science of this. You may be strongly emotional & feel deeply about the future of this planet, but that doesn’t mean you understand greenhouse gases.) Now, what about Obama? I enjoy listening to his soaring rhetoric, but his dream of America does not match mine even though I am a Democrat. He seems determined to portray Americans as having lost their way & their souls. This does not match my worldview. I also do not hear from Obama a pragmatic and principled path to reduce the size of our monstrous government, nor do I have confidence he will portray or defend the U.S. unapologetically. I cannot vote for him. My ideals, optimism, & distrust of governmental largess are better represented by Palin & McCain. They recognize that individual Americans are the most generous contributors in the world toward those whose cities and countries are sacked by devastating floods, earthquakes, & manmade calamities. That is not a nation or a people that has lost its way! Obama sees things differently, and IMHO, incorrectly. We do not need government handouts, we need government restraint in spending. We do not need rhetoric, we need active leaders who stand up to members of their own party and reach across the aisle for the good of the country. Thanx for reading.

A Wonderful Choice
By Anonyme -
As a lifelong Republican I was very interested to see who John McCain picked as a running mate. Although I like Mitt Romney I felt that choosing him would be more of the same, another white male. McCain's choice of Sarah Palin was brilliant. A woman, a conservative, an energizing, exciting person.
I do not totally agree with all of Senator McCain's or Governor Palin's stands on specific issues but I certainly know that they will be better for the US than Senator Obama.

Sarah Palin
By Joanne Robrahn - Palm Coast, FL, USA
This was a patronizing and poorly thought-out choice for Vice President. Obviously, McCain and his Republican cohorts thought by simply choosing a female, he would attract female voters. Unforunately, the female he chose is highly unqualified for the position, insanely conservative, and falls ridiculously far of the Religious Right for this woman's vote. Her misuse or abuse of her current status leads me to believe she does not have political (or moral) scruples, as do the blatant lies she's made in ads stating she "stopped the 'Bridge to Nowhere' and "fought against earmarks."
"Fact Check: McCain misstates Palin earmarks record
By JIM KUHNHENN – 46 minutes ago
WASHINGTON (AP) — John McCain continued to laud his running mate, Sarah Palin, as a budget cutter on Friday, this time erroneously asserting that as governor of Alaska she had not sought congressional earmarks for her state.
In fact, while Palin has significantly reduced the state's earmark requests, she asked for nearly $200 million in targeted spending for the 2009 fiscal year. And in an interview with ABC News aired Friday, she defended her earmark requests, emphasizing that she opposed 'earmark abuse'."
And on the Bridge to Nowhere:
" Sarah Palin, former mayor of Wasilla, played host to ABC News anchor Charlie Gibson today in her home town, where the governor of Alaska confronted apparent changes in her stance on 'The Bridge to Nowhere,' the most infamous of 'earmarks' -- which Palin was for before she was against it, as Gibson put it.
'I was,' Palin concedes in the interview, which will air on ABC's World News tonight at 6:30 pm EDT, with more on ABC's 20/20 at 10 and Nightline at 11:35 pm - talk about running the tables." by Mark Silva.
This is not a person I want in the White House in any capacity.

Palin as a Potential Vice President/President
By Lynda Sanders - Olympia, WA USA
I think McCain was WRONG to select this Barbie doll, Mooseilini person for his running mate. He is 72 years old, has had cancer and if he died in office, this woman is NOT qualified to be President of the USA. If McCain was really concerned about his country, he would have selected a VP who was qualified to be president. The USA has had 8 years with a disasterous president and cannot afford another presidential disaster.

McCain's pick has reversed the course of this election. Sarah is a delight and everybody's favorite next door neighbor that honors truth, competence, humility, and servanthood. She has done what no one believed could be done before her selection. Polls then; Obama 60% to be elected; now McCain + 4%. WOW!!!
