A flurry of personal and legal revelations battering Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin Tuesday raised new questions about John McCain's risky running mate pick.

Palin rocked the first day of the Republican National Convention on Monday by announcing that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter was pregnant, but that the girl would have the baby and marry the father.

It also emerged Palin had hired a lawyer to defend herself in a legislative probe into her alleged abuse of powers as Alaska governor and there were reports her husband Todd was arrested for drink driving more than 20 years ago.

Late Monday, reports were also emerging that Palin had once been a member of the fringe Alaska Independence Party.

The revelations forced McCain's camp to defend its vice presidential vetting operation of Palin, who was largely unknown nationally before the Arizonan sent shockwaves through the political world by naming her last week.

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds told CNN that the Arizona senator learned about the pregnancy of Bristol Palin during the vetting process before he chose her.

"He did not consider it a disqualifier." Bounds said.

But questions about the thoroughness of the checks into Palin's background were amplified by reports that a team of 12 Republican lawyers was heading to Alaska to perform extra scrutiny on Palin.

There was also fresh scrutiny into the so-called "trooper-gate" scandal in which Palin is accused of pressuring a police commissioner to fire a trooper who was divorced from her sister.

The governor has denied the allegations, describing them as "outrageous" and "false."

The string of disclosures about Palin opened up the possibility that Democrats would further question her qualifications to serve as vice president, and the judgement of McCain over her selection.

Palin electrified the powerful Republican base of social conservatives when she was named on Friday, by virtue of her strong stands against abortion and same sex marriage and pro-gun stance.

When her name was mentioned in the convention hall on Monday it drew loud cheers, and there were signs that her new power base of evangelical conservatives was standing up despite the new scrutiny.

"Unfortunately, teenage pregnancy has become all too common in today's society regardless of a family's economic or social status," said Tony Perkins, of the Family Research Council, an influential conservative group.

"It is problem that we remain committed to reducing through encouraging young people to practice abstinence," Perkins said.

"Fortunately, Bristol is following her mother and father's example of choosing life in the midst of a difficult situation.

"We are committed to praying for Bristol and her husband-to-be and the entire Palin family as they walk through a very private matter in the eyes of the public," Perkins added.

Palin's statement about her daughter came after liberal blogs buzzed with unsubstantiated rumors over the weekend that Palin's daughter was the true mother of the governor's infant son.

The McCain campaign condemned the reports but they appeared to be behind Palin's announcement about her daughter's pregnancy.

The news came as media organizations were pre-occupied by Hurricane Gustav, which forced the curtailment of the first day of the Republican convention here.

But by late evening, as Gustav swept past New Orleans without causing major flooding, cable news channels had returned to the story, increasing pressure on Palin and the McCain campaign.

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, who earlier told reporters to "back off" stories about Palin's daughter, rejected Republican claims that Palin had as much experience as he did.

Republicans have said that after serving as mayor of a small Alaskan town, and now as a first-term governor, Palin has more executive experience than first-term senator Obama.

"My understanding is that Governor Palin's town of Wasilla has I think 50 employees," Obama said in an interview with CNN.

"We've got 2,500 in this campaign. I think their budget is maybe 12 million dollars a year.

"You know, we have a budget of about three times that just for the month."

Republican officials were expected to announce on Tuesday how they would reorganize the rest of the program of the convention, which is due to end with McCain's acceptance speech on Thursday.

    McCain ready to lead AMERICA?

If they take George W. Bush's advice that McCain is ready to lead America, then all hope is lost.

If you vote McCain you have to be insane and lack a brain, because America would soon go down the DRAIN.

They woul be going from Obama to a BUMMER if the choose John McCain.

    Sarah Palin

Thank God it was Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol that was pregnant. I was aghast when someone said the McCain was pregnant. After all we have never had a man get pregnant, or have we?

McCain could win the presidential election in November if he was pregnant. But that's now water under the bridge. Besides McCain is too old to get pregnant. Boy, how the news gets garbled. It's a pity though that the Republicans are on a losing streak, that is why McCain pulled out the RABBIT from out of the HAT. But since Bristol was pregnant the RABBIT had to die. Well that's life for you.

    Can you say "hypocrit?"

As a rational person living in a country run by the insane and ruthless...I find the revelations about Sarah Palin interesting and not at all surprising. I distrust instinctively anyone who postures themselves the way she has. I am a little surprised that all of this has come out already.

    Why Palin's announcement

Palin was forced by events to announce her daughter's pregnancy, specifically, the National Enquirer contacted her, told her they were breaking the story, and asked for her comments.

How old is the daddy of Bristol's baby anyway?

This is too much, there were so many other potential GOP candidates with far more extensive and conservative resumes than Sarah Palin and her present soap box dilemmas.
I feel for her family and I wish the best for all concerned but sincerely feel this was a slap in the face to those other candidates that were passed by for a woman who apparently was not aware of what I vice president does.

    Media Leakage

I think she wanted to tell the country before some random family member leaked it to the press. It looks better for her if she doesn't act as if this is some horrible family secret. Could you imagine if her daughter wasn't marrying the father of her child? Do we still hold the belief that people ONLY marry for love? Smooth move on Palin's part or McCain could kiss his campaign good-bye.

    news re: Sarah Palin's daughter

r esponding to what Eva wrote: Isn't it great Sarah has a strong, good man to help with "family issues"?! Many in Britain, Europe and America are not so fortunate. I think they'll manage just fine! A good example for others in same situation. God bless them for loving and supporting their daughter and for her young man planning to marry her and give their child legitimacy.

    GOP VP Pick---

I believe Sarah has enough on her plate regarding her family issues without piling the troubles of the free world on it….

    Geesh….
