Sarkozy in Syria. The French President has taken the latest step in rebuilding a troubled relationship between the two countries, by travelling to Damascus for a two day visit. Now the reconciliation seems welcome on both sides, but questions remain as to how much that relationship can really be strengthened. Much unlike France, Syria supports Russia's actions in Georgia.
To French dismay, Syria continues to refuse full cooperation with the UN tribunal investigating the murder of former Lebanese Prime minister Rafik Hariri. So tonight, we'll be debating how much the French President's trip to Syria can accomplish, and what it could mean to the global balance of power.
Andrea Sanke guests are:
Jacques Myard, a member of parliament from Sarkozy's UMP party and Vice President of the French-Syrian Friendship parliamentary group.
Meir Javendanfar, an analyst from the Middle East Economic and Political Analysis Company or Meepas.
Jonathan Paris, a Middle East analyst at the Hudson institute.
Rime Allaf, Associate Fellow for the Middle East Programme at Chatham House.
