French unemployment rate still much the same

The French unemployment rate remained steady at 7.2 percent in the second quarter, with more than two million people out of work, official figures showed Thursday.

The unemployment rate was unchanged from the first quarter but down from 8.0 percent in second quarter 2007.

The INSEE statistics institute said the second quarter figure rises to 7.6 percent if France's overseas departments are taken into account.

High unemployment has been a problem in France for more than a decade but the jobless rate has been falling steadily since 2006, bringing France closer to the European Union average.

However the economy has slowed this year and in the second quarter contracted 0.3 percent.
