Teen killed as floods hit Britain

A 17-year-old girl was killed as floods struck Britain on Friday, forcing evacuations from homes as severe weather warnings were issued.

The vehicle in which the girl was travelling overturned and plunged into a swollen river in Powys, Wales as rainstorms continued to lash Britain.

The girl and two others were airlifted to hospital, police said.

Wales and southwest England bore the brunt of the deluge, with heavy rainfall causing localised flooding.

Several homes were evacuated and emergency services were inundated with calls as roads flooded and people became trapped in their vehicles.

Friday's downpour followed persistent rainfall overnight in many parts of Britain.

"The threat of flooding is likely to increase, we cannot say how serious it might be until the rain has stopped falling," an Environment Agency spokesman said.

The Met Office issued severe weather warnings across large swathes of the country.

Last year flooding crippled parts of central and northern England.
