Sarkozy orders rethink of controversial police database

Civil Liberties

The British and the Americans have both surrendered to the Database-State, where we are constantly monitored and spied upon by (so-called) guardians who claim to protect us from terrorism and crime. Yet these powers are used more against peaceful protesters and dissidents than against genuine terrorists and criminals. We can only hope that France - with its excellent tradition of protest and dissent - will defeat the Database State and protect civil liberties. If people cannot freely protest and dissent, without being spied on by the government, then there can be no real democracy. The future of freedom, in France, in Europe and in the world, depends upon openness - the people should know what the government is thinking and doing, but the government should not necessarily know about what the people are thinking and doing. Lets hope the conseil constitutionnel is able to put a stop to all this.
