It seems to me that the troubles in the Americas with Tasers has been that they are placed in incompetent hands-- the people who died while being tased weren't just hit once with 50,000 volts, but several times, causing an interruption/irregularity in the victim's heartbeat. I think Tasers are a "good idea" but only when used properly. If French police are as excitable and trigger happy as their American counterparts, then perhaps Tasers won't be a good idea. But seeing as handguns were only issued in the past decade, I don't think that this could be a problem.
