Heart of instability - Hutu rebels in the Congo
Rwandan Hutu rebels entered the region in 1994 after participating in the Rwandan genocide. Two years later the Rwandan army invaded the region. Since then, the Kivu region of the DRC has been mired in violence.

Key difference
Here is a suggestion for Marlene Rabaud: Why don’t you just ask yourself questions and answer them. It would be much easier than putting your words into this poor man’s mouth. Man: C’etait des militaires… Marlene: Des femmes et des enfants?
The tragic reality Marlene in that type of conflict is that “Femmes et enfants” se cachent souvent avec les militaires-génocidaires-armés-jusqu’aux dents. Not easy for fighting soldiers to sort them out. That is the key difference between the hundreds of thousands that chose or managed to move back to Rwanda after Mugunga camp attack and those who followed or were pushed by the exFAR/Interahamwe into Congo’s dark forests.
That’s why the first group (more than 850,000 Hutu civilians) walked safely to Rwanda. If it was about vengeance, dear Marlene, they would have been a much easier target. There was no MONUC to protect them…
Bu the way, do you remember that those people in the video committed Genocide? Can anybody explain why Nkunda remains “l’homme à abattre” while those “sympathetic génocidaires” should be talked to and offered transport to and from the US?
This absurdity is the basis of Nkunda’s legitimacy among his people and the source of his strength... Take care of that and you will have taken care of Nkunda.
Missing piece in Arnaud Z.'s puzzle
Arnaud Zatjman clearly deserves credit for being one of the very few analysts/journalists to actually go out of his way to try to understand this complex issue. One important piece however misses in Arnaud's puzzle to make his analysis accurate. When the AFDL(Somehow CNDP’s ancestor)/RPA (Now RDF) attacked Mugunga camp in North Kivu, the objective was twofold: Defeating the ex-FAR/Interahamwe and allowing the innocent Hutu refugees to go back to Rwanda. The operation was mostly successful. Up to 850,000 civilians moved back to Rwanda and the ex-FAR/Interahamwe were defeated. A considerable part of the defeated forces however managed to escape and retreated into Congo’s forces forcing once again thousands of civilians to move with them. RPA/AFDL soldiers indeed chased them and there is no doubt that many civilians were killed in the process. It is also true that a number of Hutus died in Western Rwanda during the “war of infiltrators (Abacengezi)” in Rwanda. THEY WERE NOT THE PRIMARY TARGET!!! Were the 4,000 000 Vietnamese killed in Vietnam the primary target of US troops? How about Dresden in Germany? How about Iraq?
Is Arnaud Z. the only remaining journalist with enough common sense to understand the difference between Genocide and collateral casualties?
And please, France 24 should not allow these pathetic racists and other stupid anti-Tutsi to split their venom on its page. I have stopped reacting to their non-sense…
The Issue of Power in the Great Lakes Region
Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this story so far, but there are some fundermental issues that most of you are not addressing and that's the issue of Power. Most of these Rebel groups that are now based in the Great lakes Region have their sponsors in the West, who expect something substancial in return of their dollars in this case it appears to have been the squandering of the Natural resources and fertile Volcanic land of the Kivu region.
Now to achieve this objectives over the years they have employed uneducated agents like Museveni,Kagame who in return have also contracted out their dirty work to Nkunda and his Militia. As usual the victims are the poor people because all rich people have fled to other countries to seek stability for their children's future.
Watching Nkunda in the last few days has been an insult to all African's intelligence, a man who can't see that the price that the people are paying is too steep and it will cost him more in the long run.
The UN says that it has done all it possibly can but it shows that the lives of African aren't as valuable as everyone else because it's a disgrace to see those children running to nowhere, women being raped everyday all in the name of saving a few Tutsis in the region as Nkunda Pretends; having been offered $ 2.5 million by the Congolese Government and Asylum in South Africa, his response was that even $50 million won't be enough! Anyone who knows the region well knows that this war started in Uganda in 1980's when these Tutsi Forces helped Museveni to power,he rewarded them by helping them to attack Rwanda in 1990 and they in return attacked Congo in 1996-97 where they overthrew Mobutu Sese Seko.
.As Obama has demonstrated in the last few weeks Africa is capable to produce better than what these bastards are offering.

Incoherent and poorly informed
It is amazing how the writers are poorly informed about the conflict in the Kivus. To hurly accusations at both Presidents Kagame and Museveni and blame them solely for problems of the Kivus 10 years after the invasion, which was invited into the then Zaire by ill-advise to Mobutu by his Western backers, borders closely with intellectaul lazziness or possibly by design to misinform readers (public). All countries have interests, specifically Rwanda and others within the region. Rwanda was defending her security against the killers that found shelter in the Kivus and threatened the Country after despicable acts of massive human destruction.
The Hutu thugs, showing in pictures, lead by a gang of mass killers (Mudacumura, Ntiwiragaba, etc) are still defended by the ill-informed as those of you who are blaming all the misery on Kagame and Museveni. The DRC is a country lead by a President with what seems as pilars of any other state. The DRC has to make a choice, so are the political leaders of the Kivus, the Nyamwisis, etc., whether to let their region and country to be taken over by maurading thugs, best known for killing their kin and kith. How can you defend the indefensible that habour an ideology of hate?
The world and the region is better than what you pupport to defend, and it will prevail. The people of Rwanda are much better off and have clear sence of direction, it up to you to follow or get lost.
Congo war
The war in Congo will end the day the USA and Great Britain will stop supporting Kagame and Museveni. All Ugandese and Rwandese who supporting their presidents will remain in their countries while Kagame and Museveni will be exiled.
report on Hutus in DRC
I agree with the previous person who say that the HUTUS have all the faults in that region. Shortly after kagame killed 2 presidents and when Kabila 1st came to power, the Ruanda Army occupied most of Eastern Congo, but were more interested in in the riches of the country then Hutus. Once they were told to leave the country, they could not take it and create trouble ever since. I still think that KAGAME has used the genocide to feel that he can do whatever he likes, pity in a continent which respect and fear the dead to see someone use them like KAGAME. It is really sad at a time when we should be talking about the development of subsaharian Africa. we are still talking about war, tribes, it is really sad, very sad ........Hope this do not happen in my country ( I am British of Angolan origin)
A shame
We understand the goal of this article. When Kagame and RPF started to kill innocent rwandese in 1990, all media groups said that only hutus were guilt. In 1994 when he killed two presidents the same medias told us that only hutus were guilt. At the sametime, as tutsis were being killing and even hundrends of thousands hutus were being massacred too, once again only hutus were guilt. In 1996 when tutsis started the war in Zaire, it was because of hutus. As the children and women were being killed in the forests of Congo it was because of the hutus. Today rapes and massacres are being done by hutus. Whatever hapens in that region it is because of hutus. The West has no responsability and tutsis have noresponsability. In that war there are an other side: Kagame-Nkunda. But we never hear France 24 telling us what is their responsability. All the crimes they have done until today are being ignored. The work of manupilation which had been done by western medias since longtime goes on and France 24 decided to take part. It 's a shame to hear someone who claims to be a real journalist charging a person to be a killer even if he doesn't know his background.
Underreported crisis
Thank you for highlighting this terrible situation in the DRC. I don't understand why the international community doesn't do more in this country. It has so much socio-economic potential, but it is the poorest of the poor countries.
Congo could become the bread basket for the entire African continent, if only its wars would end.
Today, the crisis in Eastern Congo is still the worst humanitarian catastrophy on the planet (with more than 1400 people dieing each single day). But too few media organisations focus on it.
Thanks France24 for being an exception.
