The UN General Assembly will meet on October 8 to discuss a Serbian draft resolution calling for a ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the legality of Kosovo's independence, a spokesman said Monday.
"The issue of Kosovo will be discussed in the General Assembly on October 8," Enrique Yeves, the spokesman for General Assembly president Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, told a press briefing.
The debate will not focus on the validity of Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence from Belgrade last February but rather on whether the ICJ should be asked to rule on its legality.
Serbia has submitted a short draft resolution in the 192-member assembly demanding that "the International Court of Justice (ICJ) provides an advisory opinion ... on whether the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo is in accordance with international law."
Approval of the draft by the assembly requires a simple majority.
Based in The Hague, the ICJ -- part of the United Nations -- rules on disputes between sovereign states.
Ethnic Albanian-majority Kosovo, a UN-run province of Serbia since 1999 when it was wrested from Belgrade's control in a NATO air war, unilaterally seceded from Belgrade on February 17.
Its statehood has been recognized by 46 countries, including the United States and most European Union nations.
But Serbia -- as well as Russia, its main ally on the world stage -- reject Kosovo's independence as an illegal violation of its territorial integrity.

Talk about the mainstream propaganda you got it in this article. Looks like this place is just another outlet for government propaganda and misinformation shame shame shame they have no backbones and cannot write the truth. Several articles here only contain propaganda and misinformation reader be advised.
SHAME ON AFP!!!
What about the world beyond Europe where almost absolute majority oppose it. What about China, India, Indonesia, Brazil... Are they not WHITE ENOUGH to be considered, even though they are almost half of this planet, if not more...
It is ironic to listen how Russia are using economic power to bully neighbors witnessing how World is bullied by same ones using their much bigger economic power for their way grater misbehavior.
Few months before Georgia, Kushner and Holbrook turned, in rude fashion, back on Russian on press conference when he was about to speak. Kushner irronically refered that History will give an answer if the decision to bypass UN and recognize Kosovo was right.... Well history turned to be very prompt with the answer called Abkhazia and Ossetia and we still do not know if this is just a beginning of that answer
Shame on AFP!!! You can do better then rewriting CNN.
Can you try to show that western media are objective. Shame AFP
Article is everything but not objective. Where are now those concerned with the Russian media
It pointa"Its statehood has been recognized by 46 countries, including the United States and most European Union nations. But Serbia -- as well as Russia, its main ally on the world stage -- rejects Kosovo's independence as an illegal violation of its territorial integrity"
Which indicates that only Serbia and Russia oppose it. Usual reader will not count European states to see if there are any opposing it. Now honestly speaking if there is LIBERAL media this part would not be omitted?
There are: Greece, Cyprus, Spain, Portugal, Slovakia, Rumania, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Montenegro, and Macedonia in Europe that are strongly or moderately opposing it. It is not ONLY Serbia and Russia. If mentioning all this countries is complex then putting the number of those will be good enough.
Not to mention that many countries support Kosovo independence under firm, almost blackmail pressure from USA namely Czech Republic, Poland, Bulgaria where people are strongly against it. There is even political discourse between prime minister and president in those countries on the issues In Switzerland it was also big split on Kosovo independence. Hungary too...
It is the fact that among those countries who recognized the independence majority did it under pressure of USA.
