In the papers
FRANCE 24 journalists present a daily round-up of the world's newspapers.
Les Echos (France)
Unsurprisingly, there’s widespread of coverage of Europe’s plan to tackle the financial crisis, especially in the French press, where much attention was focused on the Paris talks. An editorial in Les Echos, the French economics newspaper, praises the plan, saying several good points stem from its similarity to the British government’s rescue plan. The article argues that the British package really tackles the root of the global economic problems, unlike Paulson's plan in the US, and that “the beauty” of the UK’s remedy is that it recognises the need for solutions that go beyond the short-term.
Independent (UK)
There’s also rare praise for British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in the UK press. The Independent claims beleaguered Brown is doing well from the financial crisis, and that the world is following his lead. An analysis piece claims Brown is experiencing an “extraordinary turnaround” and that he could receive a much-needed boost on the domestic political scene from his handling of the crisis.
Libération (France)
‘Carla Bruni a rencontré Marina Petrella’ – ‘Carla Bruni met Marina Petrella’
French newspaper Libération claims to have an exclusive on the Marina Petrella saga – reporting that France’s first lady Carla Bruni acted as a messenger from the president, informing Ms. Petrella that she would not be extradited to Italy. Marina Petrella’s case is notorious in France and Italy – the former left wing ‘Red Brigade’ militant has been convicted in absentia in Italy for her role in deadly attacks, but was fighting her extradition from France through a hunger strike. The French presidency ruled recently that she would be allowed to remain in France, and according to Libération, it’s Carla Bruni who bore the message in person, visiting Marina Petrella in hospital. They quote half-Italian Ms. Bruni as saying she tried to encourage the former militant to start eating and drinking again.
Il Giornale (Italy)
This report of Carla Bruni’s involvement in the affair is causing quite a stir in Italy. Daily newspaper Il Gionale accuses French President Nicolas Sarkozy of “ceding to pressure” from his wife, and going against a decision already taken by his government. French Prime Minister François Fillon had earlier approved an extradition order for Ms. Petrella.
Boston Herald (USA)
US papers are awash with reports that Sarah Palin’s husband Todd has been making his debut on the campaign trail, appearing at a snowmobile festival in New Hampshire at the weekend. The Boston Herald reports that “Alaska’s First Dude” was “greeted as a hero” at the festival, which took place in a New Hampshire farming community. It comments on speculation that Mr. Palin was trying to pick up support from rural voters, although the Republican campaign team denies that charge. The story comes just after report found that Sarah Palin abused her political position as governor in Alaska.
