By AFPAn elderly man died Sunday and 39 people were injured in a pile-up on a motorway in eastern France involving 28 vehicles including a bus packed with British tourists and a transport lorry.
Traffic between Paris and Strasbourg was shut down on part of the A4 highway as more than 150 firefighters and some 80 police were dispatched to the accident scene, regional authorities said.
Police said a 72-year-old French driver was killed at the wheel.
The vehicles slammed into each other shortly before 8 am (0600 GMT) Sunday during heavy fog that made driving treacherous.
Police said a nearby bushfire also reduced visibility on the stretch of road some 20 kilometres (13 miles) from Metz.
