A knife attack in a Jerusalem settlement on Thursday left an elderly Israeli civilian dead and a policeman injured. The attack happened after two officers stopped a Palestinian man for an ID check, according to police.
An elderly Israeli civilian was killed and a policeman wounded in a knife attack by a Palestinian in a Jerusalem settlement on Thursday, medics said.
The attacker was wounded by gunshots fired by police after the stabbing in Gilo, a Jewish settlement in the Arab eastern sector of Jerusalem, police said.
An 86-year-old man died from wounds suffered in the attack.
Jerusalem police commander Aharon Franco said the stabbing took place after two officers stopped the Palestinian man for an ID check.
The attacker stabbed one of the policemen before running away, fatally wounding the civilian as he fled, Franco told public radio.
Palestinian security officials identified the attacker as Mohammed al-Badan, 20 and said he hailed from the nearby West Bank village of Taqoa.
At least 538 people, most of them Palestinian militants, have been killed since Israel and the Palestinians relaunched US-backed peace talks in November, according to an AFP count.
