Swiss Albrecht dominates men's giant slalom
Two Swiss skiers filled up the two first places of the World Cup's men's opening grand slalom. Winner Daniel Albrecht already enjoyed two major victories in last season's World Cup in the giant slalom and the super-G races.
Swiss skier Daniel Albrecht won the men's giant slalom World Cup race here on Sunday, the opening leg of the season for his third career victory.
The 25-year-old world championship silver medalist timed 2min 15.78sec to edge out compatriot Didier Cuche by 14 hundreths of a second while American Ted Ligety, the reigning World Cup champion in the discipline, was third, 1.25sec off the pace.
His previous successes both came last season at Beaver Creek, in the giant slalom and the super-G.
While the Swiss had two on the podium, reenforcing the impression that they were once again a force to be reckoned with, having registered 22 podium spots last term, it was not a great day for their bitter rivals Austria.
Benjamin Raich was second after the first leg but he dropped away slightly in the second run to finish fourth, 5hundreths of a second behind Ligety.
Last season's winner here Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal finished 13th as he made his return after being out injured for almost a year.
