Once for Hillary, now for Obama in Philadelphia
Clay Smith, who campaigned for Hillary Clinton during the Pennsylvania primaries, is now working for Barack Obama. He is certain that polls don't reflect people's true feelings about his candidate, with racism the hidden variable.
It was last April when we followed Clay Smith, who was campaigning for Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary in Pennsylvania.
We are joining him again six months later, now campaigning for Barack Obama. He is enthusiastic, but not all his fellow members, who supported Hillary Clinton in the primary, are on board. What’s bothering him is the “race issue”. When he knocks on doors, he never hears about it. But he has no doubt that many voters who say they are undecided actually don’t want to vote for a black candidate.
This same uncertainty is giving hope to the other side. These McCain supporters came for one of the many rallies of the last weekend of the campaign. They also have their doubts about polls which, in Pennsylvania, give an 8 to 10 point lead to Barack Obama. McCain and Obama supporters have at least one common belief: none of them want to trust polls.
