France 24 journalists present a daily round-up of the international press
The Guardian (UK)
UK newspaper The Guardian has a special report on the deteriorating situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their reporter Chris McGreal has been in the eastern DRC following the tracks of renegade General Laurent NKunda’s rebel army. A Guardian photographer has taken grim photos of families murdered by rebel troops then left lying in their homes. The team quotes several people whose loved ones have been brutally killed, and also visit an area where Tutsi rebels have appointed a new local chief, an ally of the rebel forces. This chief reportedly told a crowd of villagers that France was the number one enemy of the Congolese people, and that if a French UN envoy who visited Goma recently came to the village, he would be eaten.
Libération (France)
Lots of the French press is focusing on the French Socialist Party, and in particular on Ségolène Royal, who is now favourite to take over the party’s leadership. Royal was the 2007 presidential candidate who lost out to Nicolas Sarkozy. French newspaper Libération, which is a left-leaning publication, is somewhat sarcastic regarding party members’ support of Royal, calling her the “perpetual candidate” and implying that the party needs a fresh face to represent them. Libération’s editorial says the socialists were once the party of the rose, but are becoming the party of the morose.
Les Dernières Nouvelles D’Alsace (France)
Eastern French regional paper Les Dernières Nouvelles D’Alsace focuses on the Socialists' Congress, which will take place next week in Reims, in the Champagne region. The newspaper jokes that perhaps party members need to drink a bit of bubbly to calm themselves down.
Ottawa Citizen (Canada)
The Canadian Ottawa Citzen has a report on a scheme to get more young people into libraries by installing computer game technology. Local officials say it’s working, and that Wii consoles are proving particularly popular. Apparently the regular, older users of the library are embracing the new trend too, with senior citizens blocking off times slots to use the machines.
Japan Times (Japan)
The Japan Times has a real cultural melting pot of a story, accompanied by beautiful photographs. They report on a Cameroonian man, married to an Australian woman, who now lives in Tokyo, and has designed African-influenced Kimonos. His creations use tribal colours and African cotton, but are put together with the help of a traditional Japanese Kimono tailor.
