After she lost France's presidential election 18 months ago, some thought they'd seen the last of prominent Socialist Party member Segolene Royal.

An embarrassing dive in polls during her campaign and tumultous personal relations within the party left France's first female presidential candidate alone in a political no man's land.

But today, it seems she has made a comeback, having beaten the mayor of Paris with her political platform for the socialist party. Winning that vote puts her back in the party's top ranks with plans to run for party leadership and try again for the presidency in 2012.

But is Royal's advance a victory for the Socialists, or just a sign of how deep internal divisions run? And how symbolic are France's struggling socialists of the European left?

Andrea Sanke's guests are:

Richard Yung, a senator for the French Socialist Party.

Henning Meyer, senior research fellow and head of the European programme at the Global Policy Institute.

Pervenche Beres, a European member of parliament with the Socialist Party.

Denis MacShane, a British Labour party MP and former European affairs minister.
