Fernando Verdasco said he was given extra motivation by insults from the crowd during Spain's doubles win over Argentina in the Davis Cup final on Saturday.

Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez came from a set down to beat David Nalbandian and Agustin Calleri 5-7 7-5 7-6 6-3 and give Spain a 2-1 lead.

The crowd, praised by the visitors on Friday, turned hostile in the doubles with offensive chanting.

"I didn't do anything to the crowd, it was them who turned against me," said Verdasco, who looked shaky in the first set before finding his form.

"It gave me more motivation, it increased my desire to win and helped me find more strength. I played better after they started insulting me," he told reporters.

Spain captain Emilio Sanchez Vicario, who said on Friday the crowd's passion had given him goose-bumps, was less than pleased a day later.

Sporting event

"It was a little disappointing, this is a sporting event and the winner is decided by what happens on the court," he said.

"When they express themselves in a manner which lacks respect, they lose all the credibility they had gained until now.

"When you see so many people using words which I won't repeat here ... it's something you don't expect from an educated public which understands tennis."

Argentina captain Alberto Mancini did not see anything untoward.

"The public gets more excited at crucial moments in the game," he said.

"It happens in every part of the world, it happens to us when we play away from home. It's no different here from anywhere else."
