Obama picks Geithner, Summers to heal economy

Obama's no drama test

U.S. President-elect Barack Obama has chosen seasoned policymakers Timothy Geithner and Lawrence Summers as his two top economic lieutenants to direct the fight to rescue the economy and stem the worst financial crisis in more than 70 years.

Obama plans to nominate Geithner, 47, president of the New York Federal Reserve Bank and a former Clinton administration official, as Treasury secretary, a transition official said on Saturday.

A main part of his portfolio will be managing the $700 billion bailout for the troubled financial industry.

Summers, who served as Treasury secretary under former President Bill Clinton, will become director of the White House National Economic Council, the official said.

The 53-year-old Summers, who gained Obama's trust by helping to guide his response to the financial meltdown during the campaign, will play a broad role in shaping policy and coordinating among other economic advisers.

The two Clinton-era veterans have worked closely together and both command wide respect in financial markets, which could take comfort in the announcement. Obama plans to formally unveil the picks at a news conference on Monday.

U.S. stock prices, which took a pounding most of this week, rallied more than 6 percent on Friday after word leaked out that Geithner appeared set to take the helm at Treasury.

The picks come after Obama announced plans earlier on Saturday for an aggressive, two-year economic stimulus package as he warned that the economy was at risk of huge job losses and broadly falling prices if swift action is not taken.

Obama, a Democrat who succeeds Republican President George W. Bush on Jan. 20, has not given a price tag for the package. He plans to work with aides to craft it over the coming weeks.

But the proposed package of middle-class tax cuts and spending on projects like roads and bridges may be a tough sell, even in a Democratic-led Congress. It would layer on even more borrowing at a time when government debt is skyrocketing.

STRONG PERSONALITIES

The choices of Summers and Geithner fit a pattern for Obama in filling top administration jobs with people of high stature and in many cases, strong personalities.

He is on track to nominate his former White House rival and former first lady Hillary Clinton as secretary of state soon.

For White House national security adviser, he is leaning toward selecting retired Gen. James Jones, the former NATO commander and Marine commandant.

When Obama won the election on Nov. 4, both Geithner and Summers were viewed as front-runners to lead Treasury.

Geithner was seen as a rising star when he served as the point person on the international economy at Treasury during the 1990s. Summers, his boss at the time, helped champion Geithner's career.

Obama had been weighing a choice between two men who were close but had contrasting styles, with Summers known for his blunt-spokenness and intense personality and Geithner coming across as more even-tempered, like Obama himself.

The president-elect ultimately chose to hire both of them.

The Obama aide described Geithner as someone who "fully understands the complexities" of the financial crisis.

Geithner will also serve as the main U.S. spokesman on the dollar and the country's top economic diplomat, engaging closely with China and other big economic powers.

Another part of the job will include delving into a newly begun global conversation about how to revamp financial institutions and a regulatory structure established at the Bretton Woods conference at the end of World War Two.

The Obama aide praised Summers as "one of the most powerful economic minds in the country" and someone crucial to coordinating the response to the crisis.

Both men bring some baggage.

Geithner's role from his perch at the New York Fed in helping to manage the financial crisis has detractors as well as supporters. Some critics fault the decision to help finance the takeover of Bear Stearns & Co, while others criticize the Fed and Treasury for deciding not to step in to save Lehman Brothers in mid-September.

A number of analysts believe the financial crisis would not have snowballed the way it did if Lehman had not collapsed.

Summers, who became president of Harvard University after he served at Treasury, had a rocky tenure there. His management style was seen by some as too brash and he angered female faculty members after he suggested men might have more innate ability in science and engineering than women.

But many who worked with him at Treasury found him an able leader who sought out fresh opinions and creative approaches.

I really hope that she is not associated with VHP because I am totally shocked at the results generated by google/youtube search of VHP (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umJn98SPcsg). It's pure Nazi ideology.

p.s. I am so tired of hearing India as the greatest democracy in the world. It's a country of contradictions for sure. America is truly the best country in the world and I am proud to be an American :-)

    Obama and the Economy

Please, Mr Obama: renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement/Tratado de LIbre Comercio. There are plenty of us in México who do not believe in or follow our whiny, gringo-loving president (of dubious legitimacy) Calderón. We do NOT like more Wal Marts, we do NOT want to send more people to the USA, we DO NOT believe in Thatcher-Reagan-Salinas free trade, and we certainly do not worship China and India as "emerging world economies" but rather value them as fellow nation states. IN other words, México does NOT benefit from its unfortunate proximity to USA, except a few wealthy families, who have neither México´s nor Latin America's interest at heart.

    That vision thing.

Any connection Sonal Shah has with Hindu extremists just confirms the consistency of President Elect Barack Obama’s vision of facile peaceful global co-existence. During the election he was forced to let three aids and/or advisors go - Minha Husaini, Mazen Asbahi, and Robert Malley – because of meetings with Islamic extremists.

    Naïve? Perish the thought!

    Sonal and Shah

    Hello,

Sonal is a very common name among people who hail from Gujarat. And Shah is another common surname for people who hail from Gujarat.

Fire off a search in the Mumbai Telephone directory for Sonal Shah and you will get pages and pages of names.

    Point I am making is:

Just because Sonal Shah is a national contributor to a good cause - earthquake relief - should not mean that Obama staffer Sonal Shah is the same person.

Heck, Sonal Shah is as common as John Smith!

    Sonal Shah/Obama appointee!

In current American society's zeal to make sure there is nationalized diversity in all areas of our culture, our politicians and media are gung ho to put anyone in various positions of responsibility without checking of any backgrounds. We just elected a president without thoroughly checking his past so, could we expect any less from his appointees? And, naturally, we can't expect to have her swear her loyalty to the constiturion of the United States over her ties to any other country by heredity. That would border on profiling and Heaven forbid we as a nation would be found guilty of THAT crime?

    Sonal Shah's appointment

Just another in a string of mistakes the American voter has hoisted onto the world.

As the world prepares for the 3rd Clinton administration, the antithesis of change will continue. Inclusion and tolerance do not include christians in the USA or in the rest of the world.

    Sonal Shah

I personally cannot condemn Ms. Shah for being connected with the VHPA. BECAUSE, the only connection that you are saying she had with them was with relief work for the people of her family's home town. Who among us, if given a chance to help bring relief to people, especially people who live where some of our family live(d), would not lend their help?
Can you show proof that she was a party to the violence perpetuated by this group? Or can you only show where she reached out to help people?

    Thank You France 24

American media is still too involved in a love fest of President Elect Obama and a joyous self absorption and recognition of their power in regards to his election, they continue the discussion of the weak and ridiculous faux-conservative Mc Cain, and the blunders of the Bush administration to the point that the horse is so dead it's glue already (my apologies to PETA, this was just a figure of speech). To see a fresh bit of news actually focusing on the transition team of the President Elect was actually a bit spell binding, I couldn't take my eyes off the story. Thank you France 24 for providing a superb alternative to CNN, BBC, and Fox News.

    illuminating!

Whether or not Shah's involvement with VHPA-related programs in India warrants her exclusion from Obama's transitional team, as an NRI and "insular child of the American suburbs" myself I very much hope that the hidden connections between Indian-American charity organizations and Hindu nationalist groups abroad will be brought to light by this story.

Sonal Shah's appointment to the transition team

It's does not come as any surprise that Sonal Shah belongs to a Hindu Extremist Group. Remember that the people inIndia that were celebrating Sonal Shah's appointment were also Hindu Extremists. Of course they have to be from the Brahmins or high caste Hindus who while in a minority control India by their monetary power and also run the very government of that country.

Who set the mobs on Christians in Bihar, India? The same same Hindu Extremists of which Sonal Shah is a member. The murder of the Austraian missionary and his two young sons in Gujerat, India is the work of Hindu Extremists. To hundreds of millions of low caste Hindus their life is hell on earth because of the abuse by high caste Hindus who also control local government and police forces in India. Low caster Hindus can be murdered and no one will seek to question the reasons why, because that could bring about their own demise.

People should not always point the finger at Islamic militants, because there are also Hindy militants to contend with. Here is where work needs to be done to expose the sham democracy that India has been since 1947.

One sided story that does not attempt to reach accross the aisle

This story seems a bit one-sided to me. Ms Jacinto does not seem to want to present Ms Shah's side of the story. Surely, it is fairly easy to reach the "prominent Indians" and "secular progressives" who are defending her, right? Was such an attempt made? Did every one of them refuse to go on the record? Seems a bit strange that such a one-sided story be reported.
