REYKJAVIK - Thousands of Icelanders demonstrated in Reykjavik on Saturday demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Geir Haarde and Central Bank Governor David Oddsson for failing to stop a financial meltdown in the country.

It was the latest in a series of protests in the capital since the financial meltdown that crippled the island's economy.

Hordur Torfason, a well-known troubadour in Iceland and the main organiser of the protests, said the protests would continue until the government stepped down.

"They don't have our trust and they are no longer legitimate," Torfason said as the crowds gathered in the drizzle before the Althing, the Icelandic parliament.

A separate group of 200-300 people gathered in front of the city's main police station demanding the release of a young protester being held there, Icelandic media reported.

Police in riot gear used pepper spray to drive back an attempt to free the protester during which several windows at the police station were shattered. The protester was later released after a fine he had been sentenced to pay was paid.

Iceland's three biggest banks -- Kaupthing, Landsbanki and Glitnir -- collapsed under the weight of billions of dollars of debts accumulated in an aggressive overseas expansion, shattering the currency and forcing Iceland to seek aid from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

This week, the North Atlantic island nation of 320,000 secured a package of more than $10 billion in loans from the IMF and several European countries to help it rebuild its shattered financial system.

Despite the loans, Iceland faces a sharp economic contraction and surging unemployment while many Icelanders also risk losing their homes and life savings.

A young man climbed onto the balcony of the Althing building, where the president appears upon inauguration and on Iceland's national day, and hung a banner reading: "Iceland for Sale - $2.100.000.000", the amount of the loan Iceland is getting from the IMF.

The rally lasted less than one hour and as daylight began to wane, demonstrators drifted away into the nearby coffee shops where the price of a cup of coffee has shot up to 300 kronas in the last few weeks, up by about one third from before the crisis struck, as the currency has tumbled.

Opposition parties tabled a no-confidence motion in the government on Friday over its handling of the crisis, but the motion carries little chance of toppling the ruling coalition which has a solid parliamentary majority.

"I've just had enough of this whole thing," said Gudrun Jonsdottir, a 36-year-old office worker.

"I don't trust the government, I don't trust the banks, I don't trust the political parties, and I don't trust the IMF. We had a good country here and they've ruined it."

Riots in Iceland

Me and my fellow countrymen are fed up with the lies and biases that politicians have been feeding the Nation for decades now. Litle before the meltdown last autmn, huge transactions of money where made to countries that hide money from authorities. Countries such as Cayman Islands and other.

So we are pursuing our "kitchen-utensils-revolution", cause we use pots, pans and cans and make a unbearable noise to be heard. Violence is forbidden and also damage to government property (ours of course).

We are not only dealing with useless politicians, but also hooligans that "garnish" them selves with titles such as respectable businessmen (my a....). And many of us have lost their jobs and are on the verge of loosing their homes also if nothing is done NOW to help those who are in the worst state of financial crisis.

And who gets to pay for their treachery other than the taxpayer in Iceland...

bail out

My first thought was 'Why should I as a taxpayer bail out these business. The CEO's have lived the high life for many years. Now they want us to get them out of the mud. All the while keeping there private jets, big mansions and big salaries. How dare they treat us with contempt. But on reflection if the bail out will stop people losing their jobs then maybe we have to agree to it. But the highflyers must be held accountable. They can't be allowed to profit from other peoples' misery.

Comment upon support for banks

Individual banks ought not to be protected from losses and closurers, as the whole financial system will not disolve. We have built a civilisation to include the free flow of capital and business through the trust principle, which remains intact irregardless of the health of one bank or another.

Iceland economic woes

I hate to see what is happening in Iceland. My mother is from Iceland and I have many relatives there. They are very hard working good people who deserve much more then all of this. I dont have an answer but it just seems so unreal and I am hoping and praying for Iceland to become economically stable once again and soon. Island, you are in my prayers.

where's Fenrir when you need him?

The Solution

The solution to the economic mess is to get off the back of businesses and Corporations. Drop the Federal Excise Tax, the Capital Gains Tax, and then revise the tax code and go with a flat 10% flat tax for all businesses and individuals. The economy would explode with growth. I personally have held off and will not grow my company until I am free from all the taxes, permits, fees, costly licenses, and other restraining costs. The USA has the highest corporate taxes in the world...and we have lost touch with free market capitalism. We are a socialist leaning country with a free market system that is being stymied with burdesome taxation. Furthermore, we cannot keep giving handouts to those that come into this country illegally. California alone has a 15 billion dollar deficit this year, while we spend 11 billion for illegals. How can we afford services for our own disadvantaged, when we provide services for illegal aliens? We must wake up and say enough is enough...just like Iceland.

Theft

We are witnessing by far the largest theft in human history: $2.4 Trillion+ from the voting taxpayers to the already wealthy. The rich know what's ahead and they're using our money to keep them rich. Yet us idiot taxpayers are getting what we deserve. We voted for the rascals who created Mae & Mac and this mess and we keep voting them back in office. But once we lose faith in the politicians as we are losing faith in the bankers, we will react like the Icelanders. I wish it wasn't coming, but it is and the world will suffer along with us.

10 billion for 320,000 people

10 billion for 320,000 people nice bail out if you can get it.
Dennis

GO FOR IT!

We will probably be rioting here in the USA over the same things. Our Congress SUCKS!

Tread lightly

This course of action, if moderated, can bring about change. However, tread lightly or the forces of Communism will begin to answer your call, or worse; outright anarchy. It is my opinion that the U.S. government should simply step in and correct the problem that got the world in this mess. The lack of regulation in the government backed entities, Fannie and Freddie Mac, along with their corrupt mismanagement, has been the root of financial world’s woes. If the government simply reduces all mortgages on primary residences by 25%, it would cost roughly 2.4 Trillion dollars; a lot less than their spending at the fed-funds window and bailing out companies. This would quickly provide liquidity throughout the U.S. in the form of consumers having more buying/saving power.

Americans want change ???

I often wonder about this, they scream about change but keep voting for the same two parties. You will never get change that way. Keep electing the same ignorant senators and congressmen, who keep us in wars, make horrible trade deals, and keep the same foreign policy we have had since the cold war. Nothing these guys do work! Example or foreign policy on Iran and Cuba, we really taught Fidel Castro a lesson, keeping him from trading with us, oddly he is still around but the foreign policy geniuses that devised the plan are long DEAD! Isolating iran really worked too, they seem to be doing just fine with out our busy body beaurecrats poking around, they even managed to develop a nuclear program. Great Job on all the change.

Trouble brewing

This is just the tip of the iceburg, pun intended! I hope those in the ivory towers everywhere are paying close attention to Iceland because they ain't seen nothing yet! While the West is dealing with this financil crisis our enemies are scheming like never before and I believe the next four years are going to be some of the harshest we've ever seen, in so many ways!! As so many have already mentioned this financial crisis has been perpetrated by the socialist left and now they have more power than ever before here in the U.S.A. Whether you like us or not we're an integral part of the world's economy, the free world anyway. Most of the countries of old Europe have been peacefully invaded and are being bred out of existence. The taxpayers of those same countries are even paying the costs that help support those that would never dream of assimilating. They're assimilating the very countries that helped them escape the horid conditions that they are now trying to force down everyone else's throat through sharia to start with. A fworldwide financial crisis of this magnitude is just what a "new world order" would need to get started. I'm no conspiracy nut either and I would've never believed a socialist could get elected President of the U.S.A. until the last year or so. I don't know exactly what's coming but I fear America will never recover to be the same and as we go, so goes the most of the free world. Our mighty military will be gutted to make way for a new "civilian security force just as strong, just as well funded as our military." b.o. The people of Iceland have made the first move but I'm quite sure it's only the begining.

econ

there are lots of pols and bankers that need to be drug thru the streets before I will be satisfied

Iceland

At least they are getting a message across. Us Americans are still sitting on our behinds wishing in one hand and $!%!!!^& in the other. While some rich corporate %&@# are still living in the lap of luxury. Corporate F's who have stolen, are still stealing. We should be doing the same ripping some people out of there special little offices and hanging them for treason. That is exactly what these people have been doing to us since the Regan era. Committing TREASON

IMF

seceed from the IMF and move to a higher level away from this controlling group of greedy bankiers!!!

Forgot to Add

It's ALWAYS the little guy/lady who gets skrewed in these situations; this is true EVERYWHERE and America is no exception. How the little guy can defend the (FILL IN THE BLANK) hot shots who through manipulation of The System and outright maleficence; and who are still skrewing the little guy, getting bailed-out by the chump little guy, and won't really PAY at all for their negligence and crimes....a guy with a small amount of drugs runs the serious risk of going to prison while those (FILL IN THE BLANK) who've ruined millions of people's lives get off not only scot free but bailed out by the very same people who've been skrewed the most!

Response

For all you Citizens of One World, One Love: Welcome to reality. Countries - and banks - operate best w/borders/boundaries. Socialism doesn't work. Europe, etc. is now finally realizing that fact, even as the Almost American Messiah prepares to remake this free country into the People's Republic of Obamatrons. The proper solution lies in replacing frugality (and self-efficacy) w/greed. That will not happen under the Savior Obama. Expect more bogus rescues until he and his completely destroy what's ours.

Re: Capitalism

"Think before you act" obviously doesn't know what "capitalism" is. Commerce can take many forms. And for most of human history it hasn't been in the form of capitalism. It just this type of wide-spread ignorance that assures that this "blip" is going to take on the proportions of a catastrophe.

Show us the way to get it done.

I sincerely hope Iceland recovers the liberties that were robbed from them by central banking. I wouldn't mind seeing the day when the Federal Reserve is wiped from existence (not their employees, just the damn building and every shred of paper in it). For a viable alternative, I would recommend venusproject.com for some suggestions. In case you're wondering, this is not technically treason, as the FR is not a government entity, only private with government functions.

Still blaming the poor

The bankers, corporate minions and market speculators have brought us to ruin, and morons are still trying to blame the poor. We know who you are, so when the hard times really hit, don't expect any charity.

No, YOU have shattered your OWN country...

by electing the people in charge and expecting socialism to take care of everyone.

People THRIVE when they work towards their own self-interest. That isn't selfish, it's common sense. Don't EVER expect the government or banks or internationalists to take care of you. They will always put themselves first, as per my previous sentence. Take care of yourselves and your own families; nobody will do it for you as nobody has your best interest at heart. Why SHOULD they? That is YOUR job.

You have a beautiful country and a beautiful people. Iceland is the only place left on this earth that I want to visit. FIX YOUR COUNTRY BY TAKING IT BACK!!!

Iceland Riots - Police State

I saw the video and if the police are going to hold up in the building to protect the government then the people need to surround the building and starve those inside until they are willing to open the doors. Block any tunnels leading to the building as well.

blackcoptermdia.com

Is this just the beginning?

Iceland Revolt.

Dont worry , guys . We´ll lead the way and show the world how to get back at these politicians and moneyleeches. We´ll be the first to denounce this bull that has been stuffed down our throat for decades.
The situation here is unique as in that NO-One has the trust of the people not the government, not the opposition, not the media , not the police, nobody ! Once you cross that line, changes are inevitable, we are fed up with all of it ....all of it . And "we aint working on Maggie´s farm no more"

Think before you act...

If capitalism were done then why are you still going to work, buying food, buying petro, etc? The reality is that this is a hiccup in the road of progress. Look how far the world has come in the last 100 years. We're reading news on our blackberries and traveling around the world. We've cured serious diseases and we're on the brink of curing more. The naysayers will grow loud in hopes that they force bank runs and a self-fulfilling prophecy that destroys the economic order and makes EVERYONE homeless and jobless, but it WON'T work.

financial crisis - Iceland

When the Liberals under Jimmy Carter had control of the US government, they wanted to expand the Democrat Voting block with a scam to put poor people into homeownership. Because the banks wouldn’t make the loans because they were doubtful that they would get repaid, the Democrat’s in Washington then forced these Banks to make these bad loans then the US government bought these sub-prime loans thru Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Supporters still in control, Chris Dodd, Barney Frank.Chuckie Schumer, Maxine Walters to name but a few and Obama who thru is work as a Community Organizer with Acorn ,a Democrat front group involved in low income housing and voter fraud in the US, were a major cause of this mess and cannot be expected to clean it up
After 911 Greenspan loosened the money supply to get the economy on the rise but didn’t tighten it up early enough. Stocks go up and down. Housing goes up and down also. Cheap money, down stock market, people put money in housing with cheap, plentiful money. Nice hedge! Only problem was that they forgot that housing prices can also fall. They did that after all of the doom and gloom talk.
These bad loans were packaged into securitized debt with good and bad loans bundled and sold off to Wall Street which were rebundled and sold to Iceland and throughout the world.
. We called an economic slow down a recession for over a year and caused a real recession when the economy slowed because we scared the living daylights ( not the word I first used. Site wouldn’t let me use it ) out of the American people who cut down and stopped spending money preparing for the looming economic doom. It worked. We got Obama and the people who caused this mess reelected.
I want to see those who caused me to lose a ton of my retirement funds prosecuted and hung from the scaffolds in Washington but that will never happen now. The perpetrators are now the new sheriff in town!!!

The USA is in the same boat

The corrupt banking system that has done this to Iceland will finish off USA within a year. What will the Americans posting comments negative to the people of Iceland have to say when it happens in the USA? It takes a large dose of stupidity to be negative to Iceland while American taxpayers are being billed $7.47 trillion for their banks. It's the same fraud, Americans are just paying a lot more and proving we are without doubt the dumbest people on this earth.

You voted for the people who ruined Iceland

Aren't the people of Iceland the people who voted the politicians, who ruined the country, into office. Now they turn around and blame everybody else. You got what you voted for, live with it.

Response

I commend you for standing up to this. You have hit the nail right on the head, and if only my fellow Americans had any backbone or sense they would do something here because we are headed for the very same fate.

Can you say "Third Reich" in America. Hitler had his own civilian police force, it was called the SA.
