In the papers
France 24 journalists present a daily round-up of the international press.
Libération (France)
Good luck…
With a margin of just 102 votes, Martine Aubry beat Ségolène Royal in the duel to become the next leader of France’s socialist party…A not entirely enviable position. The headline says it all! According to the left-leaning daily, the traditionalist Mayor of Lille, who until now was “sitting around in the second division of the Socialist Party”, won’t be able to count on her new allies’ support if she decides to run for the 2012 presidential elections.
Le Figaro (France)
See you in 2012
The conservative French daily also sees trouble ahead for Martine Aubry, as Royal’s supporters seem unwilling to concede defeat… let alone give up on their presidential hopes for 2012. As the daily puts it: there’s one winner but still two contestants.
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (Germany)/ Le Figaro (France)
We can’t wait
A European couple is making an appeal for a speedy economic recovery: Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy sign this joint column in both their countries’ conservative dailies.
The tone is rather positive and pro-active. The two leaders call for banks to do their bit and reassure European “citizens” that they won’t be facing the crisis alone.
Business (EAU)
Another crisis couple… this time in the US. Barack Obama’s choice of ‘treasury secretary’ and ‘national economic council director’ in the next administration could have a bit of a personality clash. The first, Timothy Geitner, is known as a “back-room deal maker” usually invisible to the public eye. His stepping on to center stage could involve a change of profile.
Meanwhile Lawrence Summers is the (overly) vocal “big-picture thinker” who’s used to stepping on everyone’s toes… Will this be a match made in heaven or in hell?
The Guardian (UK)
All men aren’t equal when it comes to facial hair… not even superstars. The return of the ‘tache gives rise to a DO and DON’T portrait gallery. Who knew George Clooney could loose his charms to a hairy lip?
