- Press review

In the papers
France 24 journalists present a daily round-up of the international press.

The Times of India (India)
It’s war on Mumbai
The daily went to press at midnight and was among the first to report on the attack. The front page has it all: the map of the attacks, the picture of one of the young terrorists and the accounts of the night.

Hindustan Times (India)
ATS chief Hermant Karkare dies a hero
On the internet, many dailies paid homage to the policemen who were killed in the attacks. The Hindustan Times offers a portrait of the head of the Anti-terrorist unit, caught on camera just minutes before he faced a violent death inside one of the hotels.

The Guardian (UK)
Terrorists run amok in Mumbai
A 41-year-old Londoner who was in the Oberoi hotel when two terrorists attacked the restaurant tells his story in this British daily.

The Independent (UK)
Massacre in Mumbai
‘Put your hands up if you are British’
Here too, an eye-witness account of the attack, and confirmation that US and UK citizens were especially targeted. The daily looks into who could be behind these attacks.

China Daily (China)
Chinese stranded in Bangkok safe
1000 Chinese nationals are left stranded in Bangkok’s main airport. The daily’s reassuring headline is balanced by the fact that it also warns Chinese tourists to stay away from protesters…

Townsville Bulletin (Australia)
Airport surrounded
The tone here is less reassuring still: the daily reports that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has warned Australian tourists of a “high threat” of a terrorist attack.

South China Morning Post (Hong Kong)
Have protesters overplayed hand?
So what next? The daily is rather pessimistic about an eventual outcome to the political stalemate. Even the well respected Thai King may choose not to risk an intervention, as this would mean alienating a huge part of the population. Meanwhile, the Post says, the opposition People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) may have shot itself in the foot by blocking the airport, as it mainly affects its main support base: the middle class.
