Sarkozy set to deliver a speech on diversity

Text by FRANCE 24 (with wires)

Latest update : 2008-12-17

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is set to unveil a plan to address the issue of diversity and minority representation Wednesday in a speech at the Ecole Polytechnique, an elite French educational institution.

Bolstered by Barack Obama’s election, French President Nicolas Sarkozy wants to boost French ‘affirmative action’ programmes. But his commitment to increasing diversity is limited by the principle of equality enshrined in the French Constitution.

President Sarkozy is scheduled to speak on how to promote true equality and diversity Tuesday at engineering school Ecole Polytechnique - a bastion of the French elite that Sarkozy intends to open more widely to minorities. The school is located near Paris.
