Brussels approves EDF purchase of British Energy

AFP - The European Commission approved on Monday Electricite de France's takeover of British Energy after the French company made commitments to ensure competition on the British market.

The commission said its approval was conditional on EDF selling one power plant it owns and another owned by BE and to sell one of two sites that could be used for building a nuclear power station.

Its approval was also conditional on EDF selling minimum levels of electricity in the British wholesale market and to halt one of its grid connection agreements.

"The commission concluded that the transaction, as modified by these commitments, would not significantly impede effective competition," Europe's top antitrust watchdog said in a statement.

Earlier this month, EDF said that it had built up an 89 percent stake in British Energy and that aimed to secure the rest of the company by January 5.
