Reuters - Indian opening batsman Gautam Gambhir missed out on scoring hundreds in both innings before the second test against England ended in a draw on the final day on Tuesday, handing the hosts a 1-0 series win.
Gambhir, 27, who top-scored with 179 in the first innings, was superbly caught by Ian Bell for 97 before India declared their second innings closed on 251 for seven after lunch.
England were 64 for one when play was called off as draw after tea, after the visitors were set an improbable victory target of 403 in 43 overs.
India, who won the first test in Chennai by six wickets, claimed their second successive series after a 2-0 success at home against Australia.
Gambhir and fellow left-hander Yuvraj Singh, who made 86, shared in a 153-run fifth wicket partnership to lift the hosts from 80 for four on the fourth day.
Gambhir's 276 runs in the match is the highest aggregate by an Indian batsman in a test against England, surpassing the 257 by Vinoo Mankad at Lord's in 1952. Gambhir hit six fours in a knock spanning five-and-half-hours while Yuvraj lashed six fours and four sixes facing just 93 balls until he was run out by a direct hit from Bell.
Any hopes of a victory for either side was dashed after the start was delayed by two-and-half hours due to fog over the ground.
Gambhir and Dravid, who made 136, helped India score 453 in their first innings. England responded with 302 thanks to a masterly 144 from skipper Kevin Pietersen, who shared century partnerships with opener Alastair Cook (50) and Andrew Flintoff (62).
