AFP - China on Wednesday agreed to start awarding long-awaited third-generation mobile phone licences, state media reported, in a move that was expected to help battle an economic slowdown.

The State Council, China's cabinet, approved the move at a high-level meeting, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Third-generation, of 3G, networks enable advanced services such as wide-area wireless calls, web surfing and video.

Li Yizhong, minister of industry and information technology, said at a recent press conference that mobile phone companies were expected to invest at least 29 billion dollars in implementing the standards.

"In facing the economic crisis, this investment could have an important bearing on helping to push economic development," he said.
