GAZA ASSAULT - Gaza Strip - Israeli-Palestinian conflict
Israeli forces partially surround Gaza City, Ehud Barak says
Monday 05 January 2009
Israeli forces have partially encircled Gaza City, according to Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak, cutting it off from the Strip as tanks continue to shell suspected Hamas targets. Medics report 517 Palestinians dead since the offensive began.

Interview: "Solidarity on the Palestinian streets, not among the elites"
REUTERS - Israeli tanks, planes and ground forces pounded Gaza on Monday and the defence minister said the offensive against Hamas militants in the Palestinian enclave would go on until Israel was safe.
International efforts to secure a ceasefire moved ahead with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Middle East special envoy Tony Blair visiting the region, but they seemed able to offer little beyond words.
The death toll in besieged Gaza rose to at least 541 people over the 10-day offensive. Among Monday's victims were 13 members of a Palestinian family in an Israeli strike on their home in a Gaza refugee camp, Palestinian medical officials said.
The Israeli army said "many dozens" of Hamas fighters had been killed since ground troops invaded on Saturday following a a week-long air blitz to end rocket attacks by Hamas on southern Israel .
"Hamas has so far sustained a very heavy blow from us, but we have yet to achieve our objective and therefore the operation continues," Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said.
The Jewish state launched the offensive after Hamas called off a six-month truce last month and stepped up attacks on the south, citing Israeli raids and a blockade of the enclave that Israel occupied from 1967 to 2005.
Hamas leaders rallied their combatants with defiant rhetoric on Monday as Israeli forces fought to secure positions in Gaza.
Thousands of fighters were waiting "in every street, every alley and at every house" to tackle them, Hamas military spokesman Abu Ubaida said in a broadcast speech.
He taunted the Israelis by saying Hamas would capture more soldiers to join one who has been held for more than two years.
Hamas will also increase its rocket strikes on Israel if the Israeli attacks on Gaza kept on, Ubaida said.
A rocket hit the Israeli port city of Ashdod, damaging a building and wounding two people, police said.
Four Israelis have been killed by salvoes fired into Israel since the offensive began. An Israeli soldier was killed in fighting on Sunday and 48 have been wounded since the invasion.
FAMILIES SEEK REFUGE
Gunbattles intensified in eastern Gaza City and in the north of the strip on Monday. Militants fired mortars and grenades and detonated mines, and claimed to have hit a troop carrier.
They were also trying to lure Israeli soldiers into built-up areas, witnesses said.
An Israeli spokeswoman said the air force bombed more than 30 targets, including homes of Hamas members used as weapons depots, tunnels and a suspected anti-aircraft rocket launcher.
Israel's advances into Gaza have carved the 40-km long coastal territory, home to 1.5 million people, into two zones and forces have surrounded its largest urban area, Gaza City.
Bombs hit a hospital morgue where a family was mourning a paramedic killed in an airstrike on Sunday. Three people were killed and 17 wounded, medical workers said.
"We were sitting in the mourning tent when suddenly they bombed us, we ran to rush the casualties to hospitals but they bombed again," Abdel-Dayem told Reuters.
In all 29 Palestinian civilians were killed on Monday, medical officials said.
Gaza residents were in dire need of food, medical supplies and other aid but the hostilities were hampering relief efforts, aid agencies said.
At a house at the Beach refugee camp, Umm Ala Mrad sat on a mattress surrounded by her nine children. An Israeli warship intermittently fired shells, hitting buildings by the shore.
"Every time a shell is fired from the sea I rush to carry my children out of the house. But how and what should I do, who should I carry first and who should I leave for a next go," she said.
DIPLOMATIC PUSH
Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg, heading an EU peace mission, could offer her little comfort. "We do not have a specific plan for a ceasefire because the ceasefire as such must be concluded by the involved parties," he said in Jerusalem.
"We can mediate, we can assist a solution but it's not up to us to propose the conditions."
Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, envoy for the Quartet group of powers, said a ceasefire was a priority.
"We are doing everything we possibly can to bring about an end to a situation of immense suffering and deprivation," he said after meeting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank.
The Quartet wanted an immediate ceasefire respected by all sides and to get humanitarian aid flowing into Gaza, Blair said.
France's Sarkozy condemned the offensive for harming chances for peace. He met Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and will later hold meetings in Israel and the Palestinian territories.
The United States, Israel's closest ally, has looked all but sidelined by the pending transfer of its presidency. The Bush administration has supported Israel, saying Hamas must halt rocket fire at Israel for a truce to take shape.
As part of any halt to the fighting, which has led to protests across the world, Israel is seeking international help to bolster security along Gaza's border with Egypt to prevent Hamas from rebuilding tunnels and rearming.
Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni rebuffed European proposals for international observers in the Gaza Strip after any ceasefire, pushing instead for teams that will help search out and seal off tunnels that could allow Hamas to rearm.
Global oil prices, meanwhile, jumped to a three-week high on Monday after an Iranian military commander called for an oil boycott over the Israeli offensive.

throwing rocks vs returning cannon fire?
By Anonyme - United States of America
As I sit here in the quiet land of America, no gunfire, no bombs, just peace and quiet, I wonder what my neighbor would do if I began throwing rocks through his windows. Even if my rock throwing had little effect on his safety, would I stop my distructive action if my neighbor were to bombard my house with cannon fire, destroying it and killing my loved ones, especially if he simply told me, "Stop throwing rocks and I will stop firing my cannon!"? Now what do you think any reasonably smart person would do? Stop throwing rocks, of course. So, what is so different about this situation than what is going on in the Gaza strip. I don't get it, as it sit here under peaceful star-lit skies.

By Anonyme - United Kingdom
I would like to say that Spain wouldn't attack France because they don't want to create a war all because they want a land like Israel did. Palestine is defending itself and trying to point out to the world that Israel has basically noced its land. If Spain did that to France or France did that Spain do you think that they would sit there throwing rockets that rarely kill anyone or would they make a difference by sending actual bombs? Have you ever thought of it from Palestion's point of view? Would Israel sit there and throw small bombs or would they make a fuss? Have you ever thought of it that way? As well as the fact that there is a HUGE comparism with the weapons between is Isreal and Palestine. Just take some time to think of it that way.....

Israel protects himself
By Anonyme - Canada
Just one simple question.
Let say Spain will start shoot rockets toward France. How long France will wait before hit Spain back?
Israel was waiting 8 years. 8 Year about one million people lived under fire. 8 Year parents send kids to school and don't know if they will come back.
I think it was more than enough to show to all world, that organizations like HAMAS don't want any peace.
All they want, kill as much as possible israelis, but nobody in Europe don't care about.
I don't remember any word from any country for all those years, asking Palestinians to stop it.
So Israel have no any other possibility to protect, other than military action.

the war from a pro-palestine's view
By Anonyme - United Kingdom
First of all i would like to say that Israel is the terriosts not Palestine because they invaded their land and starting calling it Israel. Also i would like to say that back when Palestine used to be under the British administration, when lots of jews were immigrating in and had settled in, they started to form terriost groups trying to over throw the british so that they can take over this land and make it become Israel that it is now. If you have noticed the British have simply 'forgotten' this. Now another thing is that most pro-palestine have looked at it from both sides of the arguament you could say. Other than pro-israel who have NOT done that.

Israel is not fighting with the palestinian nation - it is all about hamas&co, making the life of the whole region grave. Instead of developing Gaza after israeli withdrawal and building civic infrastructure and creating jobs, hamas elected to make war from behind of the civilians, causing numerous casualties on both sides and turning the entire gaza into their hostages. For how long, arabs, expect Israel to sit doing nothing to protect its citizens? Also don't forget all those notifications made by the israelis to palestinians by telephone in order to avoid victims, while palestinians are striking at the hospitals, kinder-gardens, schools, etc. Hamas should be totally removed and there will be a chance for piece. make love, not war!

What does Hamas want?
By Patrick Warner - USA
The Israelis left Gaza, The Gazans elected Hamas. Hamas does not want the country of Israel to exist in the region, Hamas fires missles into Israel. Israel phones, drops leaflets, and warns the Gazan populace to get out of harms way. In Israel one can even hear the public bellowing of the Mulim call to prayer, Allah Akbar, three times a day from the mosques. One cannot expect Israel to stand down as Hamas stands up. Hamas does not want peace with Israel. Hamas wants Israel out of the Middle East. That is the crux of the problem and the obstacle to peace. Hamas should follow the same path to peace that Egypt followed. Peace or no peace, the choice is up to Hamas.

By Anonyme - The United States of America!
I don't suppose many of you in Gaza know that most of California was once land owned by Mexico. The US won a war that set up a National Boundry between California and Mexico. Now, I can assure you, if the Mexicans were sending rockets into our cities for over 6 years, we would retaliate without fail. As a matter of fact, if it occurred only for a couple of days, we would blow them off of the map, if they kept it up. What don't you people understand about this kind of thinking? If you lived over here in freedom, you wouldn't feel like you do. The only way this invasion is going to be stopped is if the rockets from Gaza stop for good. It hasn't happened yet, but if Hamas is willing to sacrifice all of their women and children, it will go on for some time. Someone in Gaza has to have the guts to put a stop to the rockets, come on terrorists, enough already.

Israel's attack on the largest open prison in the world is a huge strategic mistake. It will only enrage Muslims throughout the world, turn ordinary people in the West against Israel, & destabilise puppet regimes in Egypt & Saudi Arabia which are maintained by the West. If radical Mullahs only convince 1 in every 1000 Muslims to become suicide bombers, then we are facing 1.3 million explosions. Remember! Never Again!
Slaves exist and walk within
Three square miles behind a wall of arrogance
Topped by barbed wire.
Yellow stars in Warsaw streets
Those ‘not like us’ trudge where,
Uncobbled roads become mud caked sewers.
Food and medicines cost lives
Of smugglers on barbed wire and bullets.
Typhoid kills those starvation spares.
Ghetto children play with pistols, rifles, stones
In a last attempt to claim dignity in death.
We watched the felling of the flags,
The killings here and at journeys end.
The world cried and swore, never again!
Remember? Never Again?
A home to ancient semite races.
King David’s witnessed
Another battle that divided this land.
More death, more blood.
Six days saw hopes crushed, lives lost
Slaughter forgiven by arrogant conquerors.
Mud flooded Ghaza streets brings disease to bodies
Imprisoned behind a barbed wire topped wall.
Which side of that wire are those who are not like us?
Bombs kill, and the weak, young and old
Die from lack,
Lack of medicine, lack of food, lack of compassion
For sixty years, for generations,
Again we watch.
Will the world cry this time too?

Gaza "faire le point"
By Anonyme - Canada
I just caught a report on your French language channel in which you explain the current situation in Gaza. I want to say that your report was shamefully biased. Nowhere do you explain that after the withdrawal of the settlers Israel turned the Gaza into an economically-strangulated prison, controlling the strip’s borders, airspace, coastline, energy, taxes, etc. You also do not mention anything of the ongoing occupation forcing Palestinians to live in hopelessness or destitution. You do not mention either that rocket attacks were a response to the Israeli siege of the strip. 80% of those living in Gaza are from or are the descendants of people from what is now Southern Israel. They are refugees denied the right to return to their homes. Your complete lack of a historical context to the conditions prevailing in Gaza and the consequent election of Hamas is shameful and unprofessional.

Israel vs. Palestinians - 10 facts
By Srulik - Israel
1) The Jewish nation remembers itself for more than 3300 years - there were no Palestinians just 100 years ago! Galilean Arabs are a part of Syrian nation, and the (original) Gaza Arabs are Egyptians.
2) 126 years ago, Palestine was an almost empty land. Jews began to come here in order to revive their Homeland - and Arabs came here from all over the Middle East in order to get work and money.
3) The main aim of Jews has been the establishment of their state - the main aim of Arabs has been to expel Israelis from here.
4) Israelis have agreed to drastic territorial waivers in order to get peace - Palestinians insist upon dragging the bloodshed for more that 100 years; establishment of a Palestinian State does not matter to them!
5) Israel invests its best into reception of Jewish immigrants from all over the World and building one of the most developed and prosperous countries in the World - Palestinians keep their people inside refugees camps, in order to preserve their "spirit of fight".
6) Israelis are ready to sacrifice their lives for the sake of secure living of all Israeli citizens - Jews, Muslims and Christians - the Palestinian terrorists are ready to sacrifice their lives for the sake of killing Israelis.
7) The Israeli Army fights to defend its civil population - the Palestinian fighters hide behind their civilians.
8) The Israeli Army often endangers its soldiers to save enemy's civilians - the Palestinian terrorists aim primarily at Israeli civilians.
9) Judaism sanctifies the LIFE and creation - radical Islam sanctifies the DEATH and destruction.
10) Israel will be the winner - Palestinians will be the losers!
