4:10 pm: Hamas leader hints at agreement on Egyptian ceasefire plan

Senior Hamas leader Mussa Abu Marzuk on Tuesday says there is "a chance" that his movement will accept a modified Egyptian ceasefire plan for Gaza.


12:12 pm: Abbas: Israel trying to "wipe out" Palestinians

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday accused Israel of aiming to "wipe out" the Palestinian people by refusing to end its deadly war on Hamas in Gaza.


8:35 am: EU commissionner slams Israel's rights record in Gaza

Israel is not respecting international human rights law in the Gaza Strip, where it is giving insufficient protection to the civil population, European Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Louis Michel says in comments published by La Libre Belgique.


8:24 am: Alleged incident at Israel-Jordan border

Israeli troops at a border crossing with Jordan come under fire from the kingdom, but no one is hurt, an Israeli military spokeswoman says. Jordan later denies the incident.


8:14 am: 12 fighters killed in overnight clashes

Israeli forces killed 12 gunmen in clashes on the edges of Gaza City, some of them Hamas members, Palestinian medical workers say. Two rockets launched from Gaza hit the Israeli city of Beersheba, causing no casualties.


7:30 am: Israeli tanks pull back after Gaza City push

Israeli tanks retreat  from the neighbourhoods of Tal al-Hawa and Sheikh Ajlinshortly after dawn, allowing medics to rush into the area.


4:23 am: Israeli military denies casualties claimed by Hamas

Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, say its forces have destroyed two Israeli tanks in the Gaza City neighbourhood of Zeitun, using rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). They also say a number of soldiers have been killed in Khuzaa village, east of Khan Yunis near the Israeli border. An army spokesman denies any tanks have been knocked out and says there is no report of Israeli casualties.


3:38 am: Israeli trops push deeper into Gaza City

Witnesses tell AFP news agency that Israeli special forces are advancing into the southern Gaza City neighbourhood of Tal Al-Hawa and have been ambushed by Palestinian fighters.
