In the papers
France 24 journalists present a daily round-up of the world's papers.
El Pais (Spain)
The Spanish daily criticises the wildcat strikes in the UK after French company Total hired Italian and Portuguese workers in Lyndsey oil refinery. It talks of a rise in xenophobia in Britain with a picture of workers holding the sign PUT BRITISH WORKERS FIRST. The piece says the UK used to fancy itself as a model of ultra liberalism…but now the right is growing and the BNP is becoming more popular.
La Stampa (Italy)
Intolerance is growing in Italy as the government takes a hard line on illegal immigrants. Interior Minister Roberto Maroni from far-right party Northern League is talking tough, saying the government will multiply military presence in cities by ten and blaming illegal immigrants for a rise in petty crime. Italy is a country that historically had few immigrants, but in the last ten years there’s been an influx of African illegal immigrants and they don’t quite know what to do with them.
Libero (Italy)
Cover picture of Berlusconi painted black, suggesting the left-wing opposition blames the prime minister for all the country's ills, including the snow. This right-wing paper says the left are making a scapegoat of Berlusconi and also argues that, contrary to belief, Italy is very tolerant and xenophobia there is a myth.
Aujourd’hui en France (France)
The day after France unveils its stimulus package there is a great cartoon of French Prime Minister Francois Fillon and President Sarkozy showing that times are so turbulent EVERYONE is worried about their job…including them. Fillon is saying – hey I’ve come up with a plan to save the economy! And Sarko replies, you’re just trying to save your job…
Libération (France)
Prime Minister Francois Fillon has unveiled a classic stimulus package, by encouraging job creation with big public projects. It’s coming under fire from the left for not giving people spending power. Libération gives ten alternatives to the government's stimulus package, including banning banker's bonuses, boosting the minimum wage and and targeted lowering of VAT. The spread shows the polarisation between left and right. For Libération, Sarkozy can do no right.
The Guardian (UK)
Porn film interrupts Super Bowl
Scandal seems to plague the Super Bowl, first we had the Janet Jackson nipple flashing incident, now the Super Bowl broadcast in Tuscon, Arizona was interrupted by full male nudity. With just 3 minutes of the match to go, a broadcaster mistakenly let 10 seconds of a porn film go out on air. Cue lots of complaints and viewers asking for compensation.
