AFP - Germany's Kathrin Hoelzl surprised the field to win the women's giant slalom at the World Ski Championships here Thursday ahead of Slovenia's Tina Maze and Tanja Poutiainen of Finland.

The 24-year-old German, who was in fourth position after the first run, clocked a combined 2min 03.49sec on the Bellevard piste, 0.09sec ahead of Maze with the Finn a further 0.45sec adrift.

Hoelzl, who has made just the one World Cup podium in her career, capitalised on a raft of errors by compatriot Viktoria Rebensburg, Poutiainen and Austrian Kathrin Zettel, who had all finished ahead of her in the first run.
